Artist History
"This is a very unusual band" said Fritz of Full Moon magazine, and he's not wrong... there can't be many bands who sound a little like Radiohead, Lucinda Williams and Neil Young, all in the same song... or who can cover both 'She Sells Sanctuary' and 'Back On The Chain Gang' in their live set.
The comparison with the Pretenders goes further than a crowd-pleasing encore too... singer Bonnie Riley has a powerful, distinctive voice with an accent from her home in eastern Canada, guitarist John Phillips mixes precise, melodic rhythm playing with feedback-heavy lead, and bassist Eileen Taylor and drummer Norma Dalgleish provide a solid, driving foundation and some haunting harmony vocals.
During a year of gigging in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle, Unquiet took time out to record their debut album, 'After The Flood', which contains ten tracks of outstanding quality by all four band members. In the studio the band's sound is expanded with keyboards by Eileen, who also takes the lead vocal on three of the songs, cello by Deborah Forrest, and effects and samples by John and recording engineer Neil McNaught, who jointly produced the album.
'After The Flood' is available on independent label Ginger Cat Records from August 3rd 2001. 3 of the tracks appear here in full, with 1-minute samples of the others, and a live recording of 'Picture Of You' from the Live Theatre, Newcastle, on September 30th 2000. |

Press Reviews
This review is quoted in its entirety... only spellings and rude words have been edited to protect the innocent....unquiet were fronted by Bonnie Riley, a Canadian singer/songwriter with a great voice and plenty of confidence. Their guitarist had multi-coloured punk-as-f*** hair. And the first couple of songs wouldn't have been out of place on a Judds album. Then they drifted into a more menacing mode, with a moody reggae bass to the fore. The songs were mainly slow and intense, with some very melodic guitar harmonies, and some gorgeous vocals. Alanis Morissette sprang to mind more than once. While it was a highly enjoyable set, I was still puzzled at the name. 'unquiet' conjures up visions of the walking dead, or The Damned, not a mellow, melodic band like we had here tonight. The most raucous number they did was a cover of 'Sanctuary', that I suspect was suggested by the guitarist, who made a meal of the lead breaks. Made me smile! After that, the pace picked up a bit, and a wah-wah pedal surfaced. Then they did a stunning version of The Cranberries' 'Zombie' that set hairs on the back of the neck standing on end.I'd like to see unquiet again before Bonnie gets deported, I suggest you do the same.F.V.H.'Full Moon' Vol. 6 No.3 |
