Artist History
The band originally started as a trio back in 1988 (with Patro on vocals & guitar, Pietu on bass and Vesku on drums). After a period of intensive rehearsing and playing gigs in Helsinki area they headed for studio and released two 7" records during 1989. The band became a quartet during summer 1990 when Mika joined the line-up as on organist just in time to add the finishing touches on their debut album called "New Thrill", which was released in March 1991. After a couple of European tours (mainly dates in Germany and Italy) and one more 7" release, THE CYBERMEN phase one came to a halt by the end of 1992 when Pietu and Vesku decided to pack it in.THE CYBERMEN phase two was ready for a take-off by 1994 with new recruits: Tapsa on bass, René on drums and Kaitsu on sax. Right from the beginning of THE CYBERMEN phase two, the guys had been building up a studio at their rehearsal room (first with 8-tracks, then with 16-tracks). By the autumn 1994 all systems were go, and the next months were spent in hectic recording sessions which eventually led to the "Needle’s Eye" album. As a taster of things to come, the band did a guest single for British label Detour records in spring 1995. As usual, the "Needle’s Eye" album was released on CYBERMEN’s own record label DESTINATION URANUS. The album was also released in Germany by Twang! records. Whereas the first CYBERMEN album "New Thrill" was a work of a straightforward garage band, the "Needle’s Eye" album had plenty of new influences, ranging from blaxploitation soundtracks via dance jazz to dub reggae. In April 1996 Tapsa left the band in order to concentrate on other things and was replaced by a new bass player Jukka. During the summer 1996 the video of the title track of the "Needle’s Eye" album, was shown in MTV Europe in such programmes as the PARTY ZONE, CHILL OUT ZONE and ALTERNATIVE NATION. In Autumn 1996 THE CYBERMEN did a tour in Germany winning over new audiences. For the next two years the guys were all busy with other projects & engagements minus the occational gigs.By the end of 1998 THE CYBERMEN headed back to their sound laboratory and started recording their next album "Element X". In the spirit of the production music libraries that have adapted the extended musical palette of film soundtracks to other media, the aim was to create a soundtrack tailored for the everyday life. Combining vintage sounds to space age sound processing tools, THE CYBERMEN have fastidiously and with scientific precision compiled this collection of scenesetters for any situation, mood or emotional impact. With "Element X" THE CYBERMEN offer songs that probe into the unknown tomorrow, ranging from syncopated flute features to high impact themes, from solid stompers to futuristic scapesetters. "Element X" is out now on DESTINATION URANUS. |
