    Artist History
Though now based out of Calgary, Shrinking Violet was formed in 1994 by a bunch of high school friends looking for something to do in small town Okotoks, Alberta. In Okotoks, the group put on their own performances and showcases, and were eventually signed on as an opening act for big name performers in the Calgary music scene. After recording their self-titled demo tape, the group released their first single, "A Thousand Circles", which gained significant airplay and topped the CJSW "singles and demos" charts for several weeks. In the summer of 1999, Shrinking Violet entered the first-ever Java Sharks' Independent Band Challenge, and beat out 26 other bands for the top prize of a 1978 VW van, recording time and all the trimmings. When drummer Rob Shawcross joined the group in late 1999, the group then recorded their highly acclaimed debut c.d., "What Matters Most", topping the CJSW charts once again, and gaining rave reviews. Shrinking Violet is featured on the Calgary compilation c.d., "Aural Pleasures" with their latest single, "Lately" being played on college stations throughout Canada and the United States.

"The debut disc from Calgary's Shrinking Violet shows that simplistic, alternative rock is alive and well. They're an alternative to the many bands trying to follow the heavy, vinyl-scratching success of Limp Bizkit. Basics are what matter most, and Shrinking Violet's straight-ahead, polished pop is refreshing. The vocals work best on its softer songs, where singer Lisa German can really be heard, like A Thousand Circles. On OneDayLeft, she gets spunky enough to give Gwen Stefani a run for her money. Backed with solid, acoustic rhythms and a happy pop vibe that isn't too sugary, this band could go places as long as they stick to what matters most."-Megan Phillips, The Calgary Herald.
