Artist History
REIGN
“EVOLUTION”
Take Interstate 40 through Arkansas and you will see plenty of trees,
animals, and plains of grass that roll on forever. Although Arkansas
is notoriously known for former President Bill Clinton, the land of
opportunity is home to another big dreamer who planned to work her way to the top
as well.
“I grew up in a rural area where you heard country music and old school
R&B. I sang in the church choir, but never dreamed of becoming a
singer,”
said Reign, 25, born Amanda Jackson.
In 1989, the teen took a journey with her family to a new life in San
Francisco.
Reign was exposed to the San Francisco Bay Area’s eclectic mix of art,
culture, rap, hip-hop, classical, Latin, and jazz music.
In high school Reign wrote raps and would trade them with a classmate
who sat next to her in French class.
“When he would go to the bathroom I would swipe his notebook and copy
his song titles. Then I’d write a rap to fit the song titles and slide
it back on his desk,” she said.
She became known as a rapper, but didn’t take the talent further
because it was just a hobby.
In 1994, during track practice at a local college, she teamed up with
a fellow runner who needed a back-up singer.
“ When I started to write songs and perform, I knew I wanted to do it
as a career,” said Reign.
She began to perform in local clubs such as the DNA Lounge, where she
shared the roster with reggae greats Dawn Penn and Dennis Brown.
After being in two girl groups that eventually disband, Reign decided
to go solo.
As a solo artist she has appeared on over 15 songs by Bay Area artists
such as Equipto of Bored Stiff, Tac formerly of 5150 and Totally
Insane.
Her style has been categorized as R&B with a blues feel. She has been
compared to everyone from Sade to Lauryn Hill, but feels that those
artists don’t quite share the same method of expressing her feelings.
“Sometimes I want to tell my man off, let him know how bad he hurt me,
then come back and make up and let him know we still have to make it
work somehow,” she said.
In 2000, Reign’s new journey took her 2,400 miles to the “Motor City”
Detroit, Michigan to pursue a career as an artist on Northern Xposure
Records.
“I was happy with the success I achieved locally and I wanted to go
higher,”
said Reign.
And that she did.
Reign will soon release her long awaited solo debut Evolution on
Northern Xposure Records early fall 2001. The CD offers an array of emotions
that young and old alike will enjoy.
“Evolution is about me growing from a young lady to a woman. The growth
from a girl to a woman is a long journey, but I’m learning everyday,”
said Reign.
Who knows where Reign’s journey will take her next, all signs point to
up from here.
