Artist History
Deep within the heart of busy downtown Chicago, you’ll find Insta holed up in their tiny makeshift studio in a glorious effort to create some of pop music’s most memorable moments. After months of twiddling knobs and turning up their amplifiers, five of these self professed “moments” have finally made their way onto this CD EP. “Sydney,” “Nite-Lite,” “Sparkle,” “Jazzed Up!,” and “A View From Space,” are the songs and if you listen to Insta’s founders, Catherine and Adam, for very long, you’ll believe it’ll be a smash as much as they do! “I have no other interests besides writing perfect pop songs” says guitarist Adam Cooper “ I’ve always pictured us sounding like Burt Bacharach with guitars, or maybe The Carpenters on speed.” This isn’t far from fact, especially after a delightful listen to the opening bars of “Sydney” with its fuzzy leads, Adam’s strum-happy guitars, and Catherine’s pure, sunny melodies. “Great songwriting has nearly been stomped out by all this American angst rock as of late and we’re here to bring it back again,”adds Adam. Catherine seconds that emotion, by adhering to the bands’ devotion to the great pop tradition. “Why did amazing songs have to practically die with groups like The Association, The Turtles, The Beach Boys, or The Left Banke? What’s wrong with listening to a great pop song 50 times, over, and over again? I desperately miss that, especially considering I can’t make it through 5 seconds of anything on the radio today,” says Catherine. Well, if it only takes five seconds to recognize a song’s worth, then tunes like “Nite-Lite” and “A View From Space” win big with their snappy fret work, charming horn blasts and buzzing organ bits. They are both mini-masterpieces brimming with a 60’s radiance that is hammered home with ultra-hummable choruses inspired by many an alfresco tryst on the band’s vintage Vespa, and by countless childhood hours spent with tiny transistor radios glued to their ears |

Press Reviews
Hey, you don’t have to believe all of our carefully constructed propaganda! Read what some of the world’s finest music writers and magazines have been saying about the insta:Between the glow in Catherine’s singing, and the irresistible, snappy, friendly tunes, this little-known Chicago outfit should be on the current Sub-Pop roster; like the best of that label, they explore the glory of intelligent music for those who are tired of a deluge guitars, guitars, guitars, but still admire the instrument and all the other things it can do within the usual framework. Excellent.” The Big Takeover“Insta herein show why they are at the head of their class. stoutly backed by two guitars, one electric organ, and a solid rhythm section, they exibit the full range of their dynamic pop style.” Brilliant!” Melody Maker“Absolutely delightful pop in a ‘60s meets early ‘90s way. Insta are made remarkable by Catherine clear, gorgeous voice, some sparkling guitars, and a songwriting sensibility that’s as smart as it’s heartfelt. Really really good” - Scram Magazine“Catherine is a stunning singer who Bacharach would have begged to have sung on his 60’s hits while Adam’s edgy and innovative arrangements make sure the music stays clear of saccharine excess. This five song debut is nothing short of spectacular.” - Vendetta Magazine“This is ear candy like music writers rarely experience. The songs are constructed with gentle brush strokes of strums, serene bass lines and a quiet Farfisa in the background over themes of yearning hearts and scooter rides.” New Times“insta are all about the purest pop. And it’s pop for purist, baby, with classic tunesmithing all the way. Insta’s songs are short, sweet and direct. Montsrously catchy hooks on guitar, trumpet and farfisa fill your ears from the get-go. Melodies sparkle with Catherine’s beautifully breathy voice way out front - inviting you to sing along with the breezy choruses. In “Sydney” the title character is humming the perfect pop song and the line could justifiably apply to any one of these tracks.” - Get Out“insta dips into a seemingly never-ending well of hooks and melody here, producing one gem after another. The songs shimmer like like a cool autumn breeze, with Catherine’s voice gently lulling you off to slumber. This is what the Carpenters would’ve sounded like with a really good distortion pedal.” - Java Magazine“Adam & Catherine’s maturely distinguished pop stylings are ever-present and effervescent across their diverse discography; The insta counts as one more important check-mark on their spreading sheet of fame.” MOD Magazine“This debut release by insta, is quite simply, one of the catchiest pop recording ever made by an American band. Insta draw you in with breezy melodies, strummy rhythm guitars and exquisite hooks on trumpet, organ, and lead guitar. Each song on this record is an absolute gem.” NME“All five songs on the EP are simply adorable in a Cardigans and Velocity Girl way. There’s not a mediocre song in the bunch and believe me, you will have to listen to this at full volume.” - Kick Bright Magazine |
