Artist description
Combining Old School booty-shaking funk grooves with 21st century sonic swirls of acid jazz, Northern California group The Mind Club takes the fine art of high- energy, stinky-face grooving to a new level. Tasty Rhodes and alto sax lines float through a mist of psychedelic guitar, over a sea of liquid drums, bass, and percussion in this vibrant musical technicolor experience. Smiles replace frowns. Booties shake. Clowns scream. |

Artist History
Formed in August 1999 as a live outlet for guitarist/composer Greg Williams' computer-based home project studio spy music, Sacramento's Mind Club has quickly established itself in the Northern California Acid Jazz/Groove scene. Their debut CD 'Spygroovin' combines blistering performances with hi and lo-fi loops and samples to create a unique, groovy, high performance spydisc. Influenced by the 1960's world of international espionage, this mostly intrumental 'thing' is well-produced, plays by its own rules, and fairly well rocks ass. Most people say that its really good driving music as well. Currently the Mind Club is enjoying national/global exposure with their full-page Profile in Electronic Musician magazine, and has just secured a licensing deal for their music to be used in film, television and games with licensemusic.com. |

Press Reviews
FROM ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN MAGAZINE, JAN. 2001: License to Groove...The Mind Club of Sacramento, California, has a musical style that descends from Medeski, Martin, and Wood; John Scofield; and The Meters. The band's debut album, Spygroovin' (Fangboy Records, 2000), evokes Scofield's 1998 album 'A Go Go.' It also celebrates spy thrillers of the 1960s and 1970s, such as the BBC TV cult classic, 'The Avengers.' Founder Greg Williams describes The Mind Club's music as "acid jazz/groove rock with elements of ambient dance music, modern and minimalist classical music, and instrumental surf rock."...Amid a true Acid test, The Mind Club pieces together its vision. - Matt Gallagher. FROM 20th CENTURY GUITAR MAGAZINE, DEC. 2000: ...sizzles with a tasty, retro instrumental groove. Spotlighting the guitar chops of Greg Williams, 'Spygroovin' features smart playing from all the Mind Club members as well as the various guest artists on hand. Combining jazzy fusion and a 60s soundtrack vibe, 'Spygroovin' makes for some sublime listening... - Robert Silverstein |
