Press Reviews
Review of 'The Accused' by Mike Davies from What's On, Birmingham, September 1999..the man behind 'Wonderful Life' one of the great records of the 20th century. Although there's a warmer note evident, he's still not having much luck with relationships, familiar melancholy suffusing his songs of love lost, yearned for or surrendered to. This is a good thing. So too is the fact that he still writes fabulous songs with croonsome melodies (hear 'the way she was before' and melt), sometimes, as on 'storm cloud Katherine', laden with big guitars, sometimes moodily sparse. And as 'Ghosts' complete with Hovis brass intro, he happily illustrates, he still sounds like Scott Walker. If you don't buy this album you may as well cut off both ears. |
