CALGARY FLAMES GAME SINGER
RELEASES CD - Grazie, Antonio!
by Chris Gerritsen
Calgary Sun,
October 31, 2001 -
You may not recognize the name Antonio Rino, but if you've ever been to a Flames game, you'd recognize his face and definitely his voice.
Rino, a tenor, has released his first CD entitled Grazie -- meaning "thank you" or "Grace."
The CD is a classic opera and religious album featuring a number of Rino's tenor favourites, including two duets Rino sung with his father Joe Rino.
Another duet, My Love For You, features Rino and Flames co-anthem singer Heather Liscano.
The song was composed and accompanied by U of C student Jacques Rizkallah.
Grazie is a charitable project.
Proceeds from the sale of the CD will go toward supporting Calgary's homeless.
Heaven knows, we could all use a little bit of a lift these days.
Grazie can be found at www.pasta YoYo.com by clicking on the virtual CD release party link.
"HIS IS A TRUE PATRIOT LOVE"-Joe Warmington, Calgary Sun, March 4, 1998 - If Tony Rino seemed a little more pumped last night during his rendition of O Canada, there were two reasons. Standing at Centre Ice of the Canadian Airlines Saddledome prior to last nights game between the Flames and the Tampa Bay Lightning were five Olympians, and Rino wanted to put a little extra umph in his singing. It felt great to hear it said silver medal speed skating sensation Susan Auch, who with Derrick Campbell, Jeremy Wotherspoon, Theoren Fleury and Tampa Bays Rob Zamuner stood at attention while Rino performed. It was a real honoUr, Rino said of getting to sing the national anthem for those athletes. We were all up every night watching on TV. What Canadian didnt lose sleep? That was reason one. Reason two? My six year old son Joe was at home listening on the radio, and hell be giving me a critique, he joked. Oh the pressures of an NHL National Anthem Singer. Its a real thrill doing this. Its never a problem getting up for singing at a Flames Game. Its not hard when youre a Flames fan, a proud Canadian and you know your little boy is hanging on every word."WOULD YOU PLEASE RISE..."- Eric Francis, Calgary Sun, October 2, 1997 - Tony Rino never thought he'd get a chance to sing the national anthem at a Flames Game. Neither did anybody else. "It had always been a dream of mine, but Susan (Smith) did it for so long, you think 'no way,'" said Rino who succeeded Smith last year and began his second season last night at the Dome. With no formal singing training, the former Calgary 7 Television Assistant Director who now works for a multimedia company, Rino has done well to calm the pre-game jitters before belting out the anthems. "No milk before the games," laughed Rino of his secret. "I just pick out a person in the crowd and sing... I never stare at the players - they're in their zone. Besides, they're carrying sticks. |
