Artist History
Consisting of only guitar and drums, a sonic exploration in to the bizarre riffing influences from the likes of Helmet, to the serious yet not so serious ways of The Melvins. Experiementing in syncopations, working around the foundation of solid rhythm, what you get is almost a pop but with out the pop. Heavy but without the speed and half-time differences. A worthy listen, just to gain yet another perspective on musical interpretation. The Litmus Paper Test ended up being a very spontaneous, energetic, session type of project. Right from the beginning it had every intention of being a full band but neither of us worked too hard at trying to find other members. It's obvious. We recorded two different sessions after rehearsing the songs only six or seven times. Maybe more, I can't remember, it was over six years ago when Drew and I started playing music together. We met while working the local Burlington music scene from inside using covert methods of infiltration. Drew was playing drums for Soup Sandwich. Mark was running sound at local hardcore club 242 Main St. We attempted to incorporate the help of Jason Dunn (Guitarist/Vocalist; The Halogens) on bass, but at the time he was preoccupied playing guitar for Burlington local heroes Chin Ho!. We had worked with Eric Bachmann on vocals, but never recorded the vocal tracks with the songs. What we have here are the three demo songs recorded for what would have been The Litmus Paper Test's first release. They were recorded in the summer of 1998 in a really dank basement with a minimum of recording tools. SM57, DI Box, some kind of vintage tube mic (circa 50's-60's?) doing a fair job, alone, for the drums, and a Tascam Ports Studio IV 4 Track. The production quality is lo-fi and raw, but it doesn't suck. The Litmus Paper Test began in 1997. It wasn't even named until last year. Drew was in a band called Soup Sandwich and I was running sound at a local club (242 Main St.). John was a drummer that moved here from Boston and we played a few times. Drew is one of the all around best drummers to work with. We got together and ran over these songs a few times and and decided to record them in the rawest way we could - In a dank basement with the bare minimum for recording tools. Two mics and a 4 Track. We didn't promote ourselves with shows or did we ever become an official full-fledged band so it just became a project that we worked on periodically. This was recorded in June, 1998. It was done on a four track and then tweaked in Sound Forge. The sound quality is going to be a lot better if it's downloaded in 'hi-fi'. Lo-fi play on a 56k sounds pretty good but the quality of the recording is less than shiny. Ahhh, whatever. Thanks! |
