Artist description The music scene of 21st century Los Angeles is a melting pot of characters and genres. Major radio stations like KIIS-FM play Britney Spears one minute and Red Hot Chili Peppers the next, and listeners happily groove to both. Out of this hybrid climate emerges Vi, an artist born and raised in the City of Angels who reflects the musical diversity of her city by fusing elements of smooth R&B, groovin' funk, ambient electronica and epic rock into her own brand of pop. Vi started singing publicly at the age of 3 in children's choirs and began training in classical piano when she was six. Dance lessons and acting workshops followed, and by the time she hit high school, Vi was what people in the industry call a "triple threat" - a performer equally strong in singing, dancing and acting. Pushing her abilities further, Vi began songwriting while attending college at UCLA. After graduating she became a session singer, both on stage in local LA bands and featured on independent recordings and radio commercials. Her growing profile and her versatility as a vocalist and performer soon led her beyond the local scene to gigs touring as a background singer with a wide variety of major label acts, such as Warner Bros. R&B artist Eric Benet, RCA pop diva Christina Aguilera and Universal Latin star Paulina Rubio, performing internationally and appearing on nationally-syndicated television shows such as Soul Train, the Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live. Vi's vocal stylings embrace the R&B sensibilities of Mariah Carey, the soothing and ethereal delivery of Sarah McLachlan, and the sassiness and power of Heart's Ann Wilson. Her songs and production range from retro-smooth pop jams spiced with wah-pedal guitars and lush harmonies, to straight up urban hip-hop/R&B joints with shout-along choruses, to epic power ballads with grand piano over ambient loops and samples and distorted guitars. Her lyrics are usually playful, sometimes dark - but always about universal conditions in life: love, loss, disillusionment and, overall, the struggle to keep a positive perspective. But no matter the style, the melody and the mood and -most of all- the voice remain cohesive. Vi spent 2001-2002 in Los Angeles fronting her own live band. The band is currently on hiatus while she tours with Paulina Rubio.
