Artist History
Steven Robinson began his musical endeavors in the fifth grade, taking lessons on both cello and tuba. "Violin was my first choice," he admits, "But the school ran out of violins, so I was told that my 'hands were too small'. Isn't the scale length on a cello at least twice as long as a violin ? Go figure." Strangely enough, both the cello and the tuba met a bad end when Steve and a couple of friends decided to test Newton's Law of Gravity on the school stairwell...
About a month after this first phase of Steve's musical career ended, another friend's older brother aquired two very cool things -- a Les Paul copy and the album "Led Zeppelin II". Steve began to notice that a lot of girls would hang around and listen when his friend's brother played his guitar. Steve was sold. He received a mail-order acoustic from his Aunt Ruth and proceeded to destroy that instrument as well (by now, you're probably noticing a behavioral pattern). By some miracle, Steven talked the folks into an electric and a 10 watt amp, and thus a career is born.
Later on, one of Steve's Newtonian collegues played him one of his older brother's albums: "The Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame". This led Steve to check out music by Yes, King Crimson, Jeff Beck, and The Tony Williams Lifetime (with Allan Holdsworth). He also played in the mandatory slew of high school garage bands and even managed to nail down a couple of paying gigs. By this time he was also really getting into music by U.K. (again, with Allan Holdsworth), Eric Johnson and Steve Morse.
Steven moved to Syracuse, NY a couple of years after graduating high school and played with such bands as RMS, Glory Hand, Featherstone, and a few others. In May 1990 he was featured in the "Hometown Heros" segment of Guitar World Magazine, the result of an asthmatic-sounding 4-track demo he recorded with a minimum of good equipment and even less recording expertise. Steve also lived in the Boston, MA area on and off, playing and recording with The Joe Merrick Band and doing odds 'n' ends session work. He moved back to Syracuse to stay in 1994, bought a house and some real recording equipment, and proceeded to play with such bands as Outlet, The Bad Popes, Epilady Disaster and Powerline. He can now be seen with The Edge,a T40/jam band kind of thing.
