Artist description
Picture a trio of music-school graduates that are down with Fugazi and Rush and play in a band that sounds like it, with songs that approximate Ian MacKaye sitting in with Geddy Lee and Neil Peart after staying up all night, taking turns reading passages out of a science textbook. Now imagine it all sounds good, prog-punk that has all of the emotion of the latter, and none of the wankery of the former. But simple descriptions and rigid categories are useless when discussing Sand Which Is; they’re only the frame, not the entire picture. There’s no point in trying to define what Sand Which Is does, because you’d be wrong no matter what you come up with. Zac Crain - Dallas Observer |

Artist History
Since graduating from Texas Tech University--located in dusty Lubbock, Texas, which isn’t in the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from there--the members of Sand Which Is have been on the road more than tires. They’ve brought the rock to anywhere there is enough room to set up their gear, and along the way, they’ve played with bands like The Get Up Kids, Jets to Brazil and At the Drive-In. To paraphrase Jon Bon Jovi, Sand Which Is has seen a lot of faces, and it has rocked them all. Or something like that. The band recorded Burn Right Through (its debut album) at Rosewood Studios in El Paso, aided and abetted by At the Drive-In guitarist Jim Ward, who helped produce the disc and adds backup vocals to "At Odds With Sisters." Ward’s At The Drive-In bandmate Cedric Bixler drops in as well, lending his voice to "Plasticity Index," which was co-written by Brooks’s wife, Carri. Brooks grew up in El Paso playing in bands with the members of At the Drive-In, so it only makes sense that they’re still working together now. Listen to Burn Right Through once, and you’ll understand why Ward posted this message recently on the band’s Web site. "I listened to the new record on the way out to L.A. the last couple days and I feel like a new guy," he wrote. "I hope the world listens to you guys, cause you are going to change things. Please keep with it. It is important. I hope you understand that." Sand Which Is is important. It’s best that everyone learned that right now. Zac Crain - Dallas Observer |
