    Artist History
jonny and james started playing way back in 1992. jonny bought a guitar for £50, our friends ritchie and squibs also bought guitars, and dave bought a bass, but never played it so ritchie did. the only thing left for james to do was play drums, so he got a cheap kit (covered in green carpet). the resulting band was pope. they split and jonny and james recruited willa on bass and became Liquid Menthol Tortoise. they gigged. they split. jonny and james continued as sTriP. In early '94 they released their first album "skinny top heavy bottom". and did a couple of gigs as a two piece. they continued recording under various disguises, with and without other members for a few years and then stopped. in '97 after jonny went to germany for a while, pedro joined on bass. they recorded and album "spiral to..." and by now the strange guitar tunings and noise took over. they gigged (loudly) and then split in feb '98. then in may '98 jonny and james got together again and wrote and recorded and album in about 12 hours, it was "just passing time". at the same time they were also doing stuff with the sPrinG and third rail. sTriP died immediately after "just passing time", and despite talk has never been ressurrected! but we managed over forty albums in five years!!!

    Press Reviews
various, including one in a welsh newspaper which rather wrongly described us as "Boston-styled soft rock". Cakehole described "skinny top heavy bottom" as "...stroppy teen punk/pop/skiffle angst", whereas forklift said "words cannot describe how good this tape is, in fact every one of these songs is filled with emotion and some of the catchiest pop hooks around" (and it went on like that for about 300 words). Umbababayeee described "songs for holly +4" as "lofi rock with hints of glamour which should make them famous" (and it may have done if we didn't split up every five minutes!!!). and finally (for now) malpractice described "tales from the undergroung" (which was really called "poetry for the underground") as "this is marvellous punk pop, great drums and real tunes you need. U NEED". - i just dug the old reviews out for this page, and i'd forgotten how good most of them were, but they were so so so wrong.
