Press Reviews
This is an cd review published inLIQUID MAGAZINESeptember 1999By TED RYBACKLiquid Magazine CorrespondentBig Bang "Manic"The insurgence of the whole roots rock flavor is really at the forefront right now, and Michiana has perked it's ears up to it. But it does have a way of revealing folk rock in a whole new light. And although, never having heard certain songs before, many find it much easier to accept, with it's subtle format being an easier form of expression to revel in. And I'm no exception.....Tony Granlund, bassist for the hard rock outfit, Guns shy, really spreads his wings and soars on this venture, showing quite a diversity that holds the interest of the listener, proving more accessible than his alter ego band. I've met him, and fellow Big Bang-er Mark Pitcher on a few open mic occasions, and i liked their sound then. But there's nothing like being able to listen to the disc..with your full attention directed on the music at hand. And listening to this a few times makes for a whole new perspective in which to view them. My cruises in the country (to keep my sanity) proved what an ideal travel disc this is. I admired the Midwest countrysides, as I identified with each song's lyrical set of common man simplicity. I found myself playing the disc repeatedly, relating to its messages in a new heartfelt way each time. My affinity has grown to new unsuspecting heights, and I inherently find myself as part of their soundscape. I've heard that they were a bit apprehensive in submitting this, feeling it wouldn't be up to par. Bit i'm glad their confidence surpassed their reluctance. If anything, the only aspect of this release that i would change would be to make it longer. I felt that 6 songs just weren't enough. I clamored for more....Especially after hearing, "Broken." This haunting treasure had me in a whirlwind of emotion, pushing the reverse back button, more than once. And the lonely, and desolate feel of "Manic" was a spine tngler all the way through. Almost recapping an Alice In Chains, "Rotten Apple" aura about it. Had I hit the reverse button on that one another time, I would've been in tears. Their name is an ironic twist that makes for a key point of interest. Big Bang really implement an explosion of raw, acoustic emotion. Not electric. So any folks out there over the ages of 35-40..don't fear. This is age friendly stuff. but the college crowd who follows such acoutic crooners as Ani DeFranco, Jewel, or Dave Matthews will see the genius in their flavor too. I just hope that Tony and CO. continue their dedication to this worthwhile project. Musically, they all reveal a "blast" of talent, and keep the listener picking through the debris for a dose of something real. And that's exactly what it detonates... |
