Press Reviews
The Choir of St. Joseph Catholic Church has established itself locally and begun to build an international reputation. The Choir has appeared in such diverse settings as the Piccolo Spoleto festival in Charleston, the Vatican, Austria and the Czech Republic. A fifty voice ensemble, the choir is under the direction of Teresa Sturcken Riley, a dimunitive dynamo of energy and cheer. With a firm hand and ever ascendant good cheer, Ms. Riley coaxes beautiful music from the voices of this diverse group. She is in her 20th year as Organist-Director of Music at St. Joseph Church, in Columbia, SC. She received her Masters in Voice Performance from Converse College, Spartanburg, SC. She performed several major roles at Brevard Music Center in the summers of 1966-1968 and has been responsible for music programs in the public schools of Baldwin, New York and Atlanta, Georgia. She has been soprano soloist in churches and temples in New York, Atlanta and Charleston. She has taught voice and piano and serves on the Bishop's Liturgical Commission and the Diocesan Synod Commission. Currently the choir is preparing for their Festival of Lessons and Carols, a wonderful event for the holiday season. This event features traditional Christmas music in the setting of the beautiful Saint Joseph Church on Devine Street. The Festival is to be performed this year on December 12 at 3:00pm and on December 13, and 14 at 7:30pm. In addition to these performances, the choir may be heard at the Midnight Mass at St. Joseph's on December 24th. The music begins at 11:00pm. The choir has also been tapped for the American Choral Director's Southern Conference in Orlando, Florida in March of 2000. South Carolina ETV will be filming "A Festival of Lessons and Carols" in January for rebroadcast during the Christmas season of 2000. A full schedule of events is available on the St. Joseph Choir's homepage. The choir has also released two Compact Discs in the past few years. Their first endeavor was "A Festival of Lessons and Carols" which is a live recording of their annual Christmas celebration. This beautiful recording features such traditional favorites and hymns as: O Holy Night, Carol of the Bells, Hodie Christus Natus Est, Once in Royal David's City, and The Holly and the Ivy. The choir's second album is entitled "Sundays at St. Joseph Catholic Church" and features selections from the choir's repertoire of religious music including: Exsultate Deo, There Is a Balm in Gilead, Amazing Grace, Sanctus (St. Cecilia Mass),Let Their Celestial Concerts Unite, and Softly and Tenderly. These beautiful recordings are available via an order form on the St. Joseph Choir website. Sample of the recordings are also available in RealAudio™ format on the site. Recently, during a pledge drive for South Carolina Educational Radio and Television, the two CD's were played on air. The response was so tremendous that the recordings were scheduled to air on a special program on NPR and SCERN in December. You can catch the programs on South Carolina Educational Radio on December 19 at 3:00pm and December 21 at 9:00pm. The Festival of Lessons and Carols this December 12-14 at St. Joseph Church is certainly one of those smaller events that shouldn't be missed. While the Pageant over at First Baptist gets much press and attention. For the lover of classical and traditional music this beautiful and internationally acclaimed choir can't be beat. St. Joseph Church and its choir is a top pick for the holiday season - don't miss this one! From About.com |
