Artist History
Most former denizens of Tulsa's glorious early-to-mid `80s club scene will recall Square Force, one of the most sought after new wave pop bands from that period. Their infectious brand of fast and furious modern rock packed many a Saturday night dance flo or back in the skinny tie years and earned the quartet the distinction of "Tulsa's Best Band" in a poll conducted by KOTV Channel 6 in 1986. They released their debut LP, Media Blitz, that same year (amid showers of local praise), and an ever-expanding to uring area. Now they're back. With the return of original drummer Mick Lewis, the band has begun making appearances in Tulsa and recording in their new home, "Flying Sub" Studios. their sound is...Second generation Tulsa Sound. As a three piece, Square Force has developed and edgier bluesier sound complementing the hypnotic groove thing they have. It's all about expressing your soul and believing in what you do.

Press Reviews
Infinity PressNovember 2000 Square Force Popazoidii (Flying Sub)4 IP's Square Force was one of the handful of original new wave bands that blazed trails and bent ears in Tulsa during the 1980's. Their latest release, Popazoidii features the orignal lineup: guitarist Randy Brumley, bassist Dart Steed, drummer Mick lewis and keyboardist Michael Steed. The punchy ?Open The Window? immediately jumps off the laser beam, showcasing Michael Steed's singing and songwriting capabilities. With straight-ahead execut ion and a grooving chorus, ?Frequency? offers an almost-Enoesque experience with a cocktail lounge groove that disintegrates into a shredding radio scramble. ?Fly Away? is also a fine rocker, both pensive and relaxing in an oddly escapist style. The Beatl es-flavored ?Bet You Didn't Know? and ?Down? are outstanding examples of the focused songwriting with overdubbed reverberating guitars that build a wall of sound on seamless bass lines and a solid rythmic foundation. A stark and barren ?Go On Home? sounds almost as if some tracks had been stripped bare; perhaps allowing an open melodic atmosphere for Sarah Wagner's brief but haunting background vocal cameo. The sparse lyrics of isolation and uncertainty weave curiously through a lonely chord progression o f slide guitars and creeping keyboards. ?Enthusiasm V1.0.2? is a memorable chestnut from the 80's. This updated revision of a burning rocker that hundreds of Tulsans have cut a rug to in the strangest venues. It remains an anthem of celebration and abando n; resurrected with 21st century distortion- and cranking up the tempo a notch or two. This new Square Force release is a careful execution of fresh melodic structures. Engineered to appeal to people with short attention spans, the disc is chock full of music and rhythm, with interesting lyrics and tunes not lasting more than 2.5 to 3.5 minutes in length.
