Artist History
Taking elements of hardcore, emo, punk, and heavy metal and making something unified in theory and sound would be the simplest way to categorize southFORTY. But that does not paint the broad picture of what reality is off of this sheet of paper. To witness southFORTY live is an experience not soon forgotten. To see the energy and absolute honesty delivered to any crowd put in front of them will change any person on any given night. It would be impossible to find yourself not on edge when watching southFORTY, with each venue soaked in sweat and blood, from both the crowd and band alike, after every performance. And this atmosphere is justified. southFORTY is one of the most sought after live acts in Dallas. Having played over two-hundred shows in just under two years has honed the live show that is southFORTY into a finely tuned machine, capable of leaving audiences breathless in minutes. Fortunate enough to have played with such national acts as Clutch, Drowning Pool, Chimaira, Factory 81, Ill Nino, 40 Below Summer, Glassjaw, Earth Crisis, Karma to Burn and Drowningman showcases the fact that southFORTY can be considered equal to some of the finest acts in heavy music today. Having received praise from Corey Taylor of Slipknot from the main stage at the Tattoo the Earth Tour last summer signifies the impact that southFORTY has on today's musical climate. Renowned radio DJ Chaz Knight has said, "southFORTY has come a long way in such a short time... They are definitely the band to watch." And this statement is beyond the truth... it is fact.
The history of southFORTY is somewhat of an anomaly. Having individually played in some of the most groundbreaking bands in the local scene, a chance meeting spawned the idea to try something that would stretch the limits of making music together. The decision was made to disband on all then-current projects, join creative forces, and pursue the sound that would become known as southFORTY. The ideal fueling this project was to create something that would change the way people look at the effect that music can hold on any audience. Vocalist Kyle Cermak, guitarists Beaux Dyson and Cameron Merchant, bassist Bernie Guerra, and drummer Daniel Thompson pursue this goal with reckless abandon. "We are just a sum of our parts," Kyle explains. "We know that what we are doing does not work outside of the framework when all five of us are together." Having received critical acclaim for their independent releases These Days(2000) and The Power of Words(2001), selling thousands of copies combined, the new 3 song demo, "Who Says Romance is Dead?," captures southFORTY, once again, expanding their sound into new, fresh directions. Not ones to ever rest on there laurels, southFORTY consistently challenges both themselves and the listener into finding music that is without borders. Songs such as "Artificial Regular" and "Carrion Dawn" capture the essence of southFORTY; lyrically personal and up-front, with a broad range of sounds to compliment the songs meanings. Recorded and mixed in only twelve hours, "Who Says Romance is Dead?" highlights the impressive talents within the band, individually, as well as collectively, creating music that is ready for the masses to digest. And this pursuit of creating music that is fresh and able to have a lasting effect will continue for the duration of southFORTY. The future holds southFORTY continuing to break new ground and expand the music that has made them one of the finest underground acts today.

Press Reviews
southFORTYSince 1997 a new sound has been coming out of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. This five-piece band goes by the name of Southforty. With a growing fan base, these guys are still local but are definitely on the up and coming.Drummer Daniel Thompson will blow you away with his skills on the set while bassist Brian Turner brings in beats that will get your head bobbing with the music. Guitarists Beaux Dyson and Cameron Merchant take that head bobbing to another level, making you feel the need to ensue in mosh pit action by slamming into anyone in your general vicinity. And last but definitely not least the stage presence and the sound of vocalist Kyle Cermak will amaze you.Although Southforty's live shows are what keeps them thriving in this incredible music scene in Dallas, it's refreshing to hear a band that sounds as good on track as they do on stage. Their album, "These Days", released just this year, has a lot of substance. Good, hard music combined with surprisingly intimate lyrics, Southforty brings an original sound to your world."I think there are a lot of things going on with our sound that separate us from other bands in Dallas," commented Kyle when asked how they fit into the local scene. "If anything sounds too much like something else, if it sounds too much like Sepultura, or whoever, even if it's the best thing we've written, we'll throw it out because it's not us."Southforty has a definite presence on stage that will rip you from your seat and get you up front to witness one of the hardest bands that has come from Dallas lately. When asked to describe their sound we received just about the same response from the whole group. Beaux said, "we are a guitar band first." "We have a low sound, a low tuning," Kyle added. "We try to keep the hardcore sound going." "I have a lot of trouble describing it," said Cameron, agreeing with band mates. "It's hardcore."If you dig hard music you must check out Southforty. You can find out more information on their website at www.southforty.net. Wrapping up our interview, Kyle and Daniel said it better than I ever could. "If you want it in black and white it's just that," Kyle laid it on the table. "It's Texas hardcore."Daniel concluded, "We try to just keep it very original, we don't skim off the top." Rock on. - L.Waters SICKGRRL MAGAZINEMAVERICK RECORDS/ DALLASMUSIC.COM TALENT SEARCHThis weekends Maverick Records talent search landed the dm crew at the Club Atlantis on Elm St. 10 pm the bar was already hopping with excitement about the four bands performing. The winner of tonight's contest will be reviewed by Maverick Records in California for possible signing contracts. This evenings bands were 8 Degrees, Southforty, Camp Wisdom, & Plastic Tongue...After a double booking for third slot was discovered, Southforty took stage second to an excited crowd. Southforty's large following, hyped with the pounding drums and audible vocals, packed themselves in tight for the set. At one point, Southforty proved their professionalism, playing right through a bout of technical difficulties. Southfhorty played hard and heavy throughout the night, never letting their energy fade. Though this band never seemed as tight as it should have, they had the audience jumping around, screaming for more. They ended their set with an eerie versed song, signing a gun to their heads, whispering, "it kills me"...Once again, all four bands were wonderful. Each band had it's unique style and audience base. Many different qualities emerged from these artists, giving the rap/core fans a good dose of what they needed. The score even closer than imagined, but in the end Southforty came out victorious.Darin Wakely-Dallasmusic.com SOUTHFORTY-THESE DAYSsouthFORTY can best be described as "rage in the worst degree". Guitars are exploding and microphones are bieng destroyed. Guitars begin this seven song disc with a raging "Todd". The music is in-your-ears from the beginning, and vocals are straight out annihilative. Other songs are "Whore", "Sticks and Stones", "Smiles", and "These Days". The five piece band is Beaux Dyson (guitar), Cameron Merchant (guitar), Brian turner (bass), Daniel thompson (drums), and Kyle Cermak (vocals). The CD also contains some truth in the black and white art work by Beaux Dyson. Take a listen for yourself!!!(Sean Headlee, Harder Beat July 2000)Necromancer /South Forty - Sanctuary, 8/6/99Descending on Sanctuary this night were two bands that demanded to be heard. Necromancer hit the stage and never looked back. Chris Agnew on bass and Josh Lambert on drums pounded out the solid rhythm on "Dealin’ Dimes." Another standout was "Resin," lots of clean guitar work on this song, at least in the intro, then back to some grinding distortion. Keep an eye out for this band in the future. Walking out onto the stage very subdued, with a quiet "Hey what’s up?," South Forty then proceeded to blow everyone off their bar stool. This five-piece is a combination of intense musicians who know how to write songs that will grab your attention. Sort of like Limp Bizkit meets Korn, but without all the cheesy, hip-hop changes. The only thing I could say after seeing these guys is … INTENSE. (Derek James)(HARDER BEAT MAGAZINE Sept, 1999)Last month’s showcase: This heavy showcase at the Sanctuary was one of our best. We estimate about 325 people attended, moshed and had a good time. Each band did their part in bringing out fans, with South Forty bringing in 74 tickets (and getting $335) while Ledfoot (62) won five hours recording time at Max Out Recording in Dallas. Revenance had 51 and Mortifix 39. As usual tickets (for a $2 discount) are available from the bands, the Tattoo Bar, and various Tarrant County distribution places. The bands get credit for each ticket turned in, so help support your favorite band. The band bringing in the most tickets over 50, gets 40% of the door. The second place bringing in the most over 30 gets five hours’ recording time from our sponsor, Max Out Recording Studios in Dallas. Fans get national act CD’s compliments of Universal Music Group: most recently a compilation which included Drain Sth and Biohazard.(HARDER BEAT MAGAZINE Jan, 2000) |
