Artist History
Forrest Ray (1910-1993) was always a singer. He started singing as a young boy in his hometown Rome, Georgia. He sang his way through high school and college, and continued to sing for the rest of his life. While performing at his summer job as a chorus member of the outdoor drama, THE LOST COLONY, in 1939, in Manteo, North Carolina USA, Forrest met Nadine Midgett, his seventeen year old sweetheart and soon to be bride. Nadine Midgett, a Manteo native, also performed in the production, as a member of the cast chorus. Their summer romance at the beach was the start of a lifelong love and commitment to each other that began with music and included music every day of their lives. The music here was discovered by Forrest's son, Ted, after Forrest's passing in 1993. In a cardboard box in his bedroom were two 78rpm records recorded circa 1950, a collection of cassette tapes of many of his church ensemble performances and rehearsals, and one reel-to-reel tape of his "greatest hits," songs that were favorites of his and all who ever heard him sing. Forrest taught music in the public schools in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and sang in local churches during his whole 40 years in Fayetteville. Forrest conducted the choir at Christ Methodist Church during the 1960's, moved to Haystreet United Methodist Church during the 1970's, and later moved to St. John's Episcopal Church. |
