Press Reviews
We finally got to his latest ensemble, TonePharaoh, at the famous Haight Street Faire....they sounded awesome...tight, powerful, deeply tribal, and oddly progressive. Neither of us could quite put a finger on what this band was about, but we were here to see the great bassist elHoward, to see what his latest creation has wrought. This is music seemed to have the influences of many artsist in it, but what struck me most was the interplay between the musicians, the way they all listened ...to the grooves and ambiences of composer Dwight Loop.ElHoward's bass playing was twisted and flexible as usual, deep and sexual. I was reminded of a bitches brew era sound....a group of musicians on a quest, driving towards the sun, uncharted roads, leading over the edge of the square earth. the audience loved it, swaying and sensuously grooving with the chunky rythms....beautiful.... |
