"Mary Tyler Morphine/Munition- Split CD
MTM plays five run of the mill punk rock songs with some pop punk tendencies. With the female vocals the songs sound similar to RED #9 at times. On the whole, though, the songs are pretty flat. MUNITION plays five songs as well, but are somewhat better than MTM. They have a pop punk sound with a bit of an edge, which is helped by the raspy vocals. The songs are mid-tempo and filled with pretty basic power chord riffs but they can be catchy at times. Five years ago they probably would have been said to have an East Bay pop punk feel to them, but nobody really knows what that is suppose to mean anymore. The CD does benefit the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. (PA) (Failed Experiment Records, failedexperimentrecords.com) " -Maximum Rock-N-Roll September 2001 #220
MUNITION "The Black Wave" Munition follows up their critically acclaimed split CD with Mary Tyler Morphine by the release of their first full-length record. Drawing on a variety of favorite rock n'roll influences, Munition combines 80's lovelorn power ballads and aggressive punk rock to showcase Mark Piss's passionate vocal stylings. Equally appropriate for starting a road trip with yer best girl or sitting alone in a dark bar with your heart ripped out
Munition - The Black Wave CD - Hardcore really can be fun. When oyu listen to a band like Munition, you get reminded of that. Fast and well paced with singing lyrics, as opposed to the popular shouting. Munition sounds like a harsher Elliott at certain points. Angst filled and vivacious, I like it. (RR)
Muddle #19 Spring 2002
Mary Tyler Morphine/Munition - Split CD - This split between Chicago bands Mary Tyler Morphine and Munition features 5 tracks from each band. Mary Tyler Morphine, who was a staple of the Chicago punk scene for years, sadly called it quits in December of 2000. If you weren't lucky enough to know about the band when they were active, it's about time you do. The band dishes out fast-paced punk rock with aggressive female vocals that could light the most mellow person on fire. They have a clearly Chicago sound and are very guitar rock based. I also really dig the screaming provided by the band's male drummer, it definitely adds to the aggressiveness of the band's sound. "Bleeding" provides listeners with a delicious combination of the previously mentioned screaming with female vocal harmonzing. This band is the perfect example of what aggressive female-fronted punk should sound like. I'm sorry I didn't know about them sooner.
Munition is straight-forward guy punk with raspy vocals and explosive energy. They actually kind of remind me of Face to Face a bit. The songs have lots of melodies and a catchy foot-tapping quality. Really good stuff. This is an excellent split and a portion of the proceeds go to a good cause (Chicago Coalition For The Homeless). Good music and a good deed all for $10. How can you beat that? Mary Tyler Morphine/Munition - Split CD - Mary Tyler Morphine play rough and speedy punk/hardcore. Somewhere in between. The singer's voice sounds familiar. Maybe a little like the singer of the Cranberries. The 5th song is a jam, with the girl singer singing, then the guy singer screaming and the 2 girls harmonizing, then back again. Munition treads common ground with Dillinger 4, Leatherface, Naked Raygun, and Stiff Little Fingers. I know that's lazy of me, but it's true, and it's a good thing. Chicago punk bands have always seemed to have a cool sound to them and both of these bands are 2 more examples of Chicago's proud tradition. This CD also benefits the Chicago Coalition For The Homeless. I almost feel bad getting it free. I cold write more good things, but I'm under time contsraints, so I'll just put a little asterisk up there signifying my endorsement of this fine punk musical compact disc. (NS)

Munition - "The Black Wave" Often times, when watching a skate video, I will hear a song that really stands out, and I wait until the very end of the credits to find out who it is, so I can buy their CD, or as lame as it sounds, at least download that one song. A lot of this album reminded me of songs like those. They are the kinds of songs that would stand out in a compilation. There's some harder energetic punk as well as a mellow rock sound throughout the CD. A few of the tracks are a little bit weak, but for the most part, they are very good. It's a fast-paced and down to earth record, but at the same time, it includes some "experimental" guitar effects and original sounds. The vocals, I suppose, can be compared to the likes of maybe say, Face to Face. However, Munition does not sounds much like any particular bands. They have pretty much their own sort of sound, and "The Black Wave" would come recommended to anyone who is looking for some good punk rock. (JS)

Mary Tyler Morphine/ Munition Split CD - Failed Experiment Records - Two bands that have a record label and the city of Chicago in common. Both bands are good in their own way. Mary Tyler Morphine is punk rock with well sung female lead vocals that remind me of something like a loud angry Blondie. Munition is more typical guy punk rock. A driving drum beat and great backing vocals, but I could do without the random guitar solos. Overall a very good release. (KM)

Munition "The Black Wave" Failed Experiment Records - Munition is a Chicago quartet with a solid punk rock sound using deep melodies and emotional intensity to really set them apart. They are reminiscent of city-mates The Honor System at times, but then tear into a far more aggressive, straight-ahead punk rock style that you might expect from Naked Raygun or Pegboy. (Yeah, I'm trying to stick with Chicago band references, lay off.) This is only their first full-length release, so I expect a lot more good things from these four Chitown fellas. (CM)

Mary Tyler Morphine v. Munition Mary Tyler Morphine brings the pain in feministic guitar rock. Kind of reminiscent of Bikini Kill, but I like the lyrical content of this better and some of the vocals are much nicer. While Munition is male (incomprehensible) vocals, but still has a charming kind of if-Bob-Dylan-were-hardcore kind of sound. The lyrical content is emotional from what I read on the lyric sheet, but you really can't understand a damn word.

Munition "The Black Wave" Very excellent alternative hard edge punk / hard core influenced music that has some great melodies and a catchy beat with killer vocals. Well MUNITION music gives off a BAD RELIGION punk sound meeting a SUGAR / HUSKER DU alternative powered sound. Very good stuff indeed. (VG++) (BW)
