Artist description
The band describes its original material as reminiscent of sounds such as that of 1970's Miles Davis, Weather Report, or Return to Forever, and the sound they were seeking is the sound that they have found; playful, sometimes heavy, yet always groovy and sophisticated. |

Artist History
It's a music industry fairy-tale. Four seasoned young Canadian musicians get together to indulge their collective love of Miles Davis' early electric music, record a CD (Metalwood) after one day's rehearsal, release it independently and win a coveted national music award, the 1998 Juno for Best Contemporary Jazz Recording. Metalwood II (Maximum Jazz) walked away with the 1999 Juno! Funky, high-energy grooves and world class improvisation. With Mike Murley saxophones, Brad Turner keyboards/trumpet, Chris Tarry bass and Ian Froman drums.
April 2001
Metalwood’s first album was recorded two days after the band had met, and had one gig together. It won the 1997 Juno Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Their second album, Metalwood 2, won the award a year later. Their last album, Metalwood 3, was nominated for the same award in 2001! Their latest album, "The Recline" releases on Tuesday May 22nd!
Metalwood is the first jazz project to ever be signed to Verve Music Group in Canada. Their debut album is being released on Blue Thumb Records, one of the imprints of the Verve Music Group/Universal Jazz.
Influenced by bands like Medeski, Martin, & Wood, and Weather Report, Metalwood features 4 of the most well-known and in-demand Canadian leaders. Brad Turner, Chris Tarry, Ian Froman, and Mike Murley have performed with artists as diverse as Renee Rosnes, Michael Brecker, Dave Leibman, and Gary Bartz.
Their debut record for Universal is "The Recline", a groove-oriented project featuring the iconoclastic guitarist - John Scofield; the most in-demand turntablist in New York – DJ Logic; and the famous percussionist from Weather Report, Sting, and Miles Davis fame – Mino Cinelu.
This album is sure to attract lovers of jazz, groove, the jam-band scene, and funk. Metalwood is able to attract hard-core jazz fans and musicians with their incredible display of talent, but just as easily appeal to college-aged kids that just want great music to groove to.

Tim Carlson - Queue Magazine"Metalwood fills the void left when the members of Weather Report decided to go their own ways."
