Artist description
Mad Nomad is a new musical group creating new musical forms: fusing the melody-centered centuries-old fiddle tunes of the British Isles together with the harmonic richness of 20th century jazz. Conductor/arranger/multi-instrumentalist Jim Bevan (presently on tour as the "Chef d'Orchestra" of Cirque du Soleil's "Quidam") has fashioned concise arrangements that hold the listener's attention (no needless noodling!). This very modern string quartet features the absolutely beautiful sound of Mike Schafle's violin, balanced with a touch of present-day tone supplied by Jim's mandocaster (a 1950's solid-body Fender electric mandolin). Jim's daughter Gwynne, a cellist, is playing a one-of-a-kind instrument: a redesigned Martin acoustic guitar equipped with four heavy phosphor-bronze strings, and tuned like a cello (and sounding like Stephen Stills's song "Black Queen"). Add to all this Chris Clark's resonant double bass, the grandfather of the violin family, laying down a deep warm foundation or bowing in harmony with the violin, and Mad Nomad creates a unique, rich blend of distinct yet clearly related string instruments. Mad Nomad's inimitable instrumentation and eloquent arrangements blend a myriad of musical styles elegantly together into a new genre we are calling "Celtic Bebop". Enjoy!
