Press Reviews
Georgia Straight: Vancouver, BCSeptember 7-14, 2000LOCAL DISCS – review by Mike UsingerKURT BORDIAN – NovocaineKurt Bordian makes radio-friendly music, and he has no reason to be ashamed of that because the tunes here strike a perfect balance between art and commerce. Backed by a five-piece band, the singer-guitarist-songwriter splits his time between two camps on Novocaine, an album on which he either wrote or co-wrote every song. Those who’ll argue that the Counting Crows and Live haven’t been given a fair shake by the music critics of North America will get off on intelligent, well-crafted tracks such as "Ball and Chain". Roots-rock fans will gravitate toward the exuberant twang of "Every Time We Talk" and "Rosie", both of which sound like outtakes from a lost weekend with Green on Red. But no matter which style Bordian is operating in, this is a great record brimming with jangly guitars, perfectly constructed choruses, and ready-for-the-big-leagues hooks. |
