Artist History
The birth of Manhattan, Kansas-based rock band wasn't an easy one. One might say it was the musical equivalent of a back seat caesarean section performed with a Swiss army knife and a bottle of Jim Beam. It was a complicated series of events involving multiple band breakups, failed moves, three bass players, rolls of used motel carpeting, two practice spaces, and enough drama to provide plot lines for an entire season of any given soap opera. In the final months of 1998, John Evans (formerly of math rock gods, El Fontain) and Matt Anderson (former member of Manhattan's emo/hardcore legends, Seraphine 7) had finally decided, after two years of talking about it, that perhaps they should finally start a band together. After a few weeks, a few songs, and a few bass players, they recruited Dave Boomer (from the dearly departed metal juggernaut Scully/Spine/Puke Weasel.) The trio began with the intention of writing music with no concern for styles, trends, or the adoration of the masses. They were simply out to please themselves. After much debate, the name Egomaniacs was decided upon, and while any member of the band will tell you that it is an asinine name, it is also a great excuse to act like boisterous, arrogant jerks. Rest assured that this attitude is tongue and cheek...mostly. The band set up work playing around Manhattan, Lawrence, Kansas City, and did a quick tour up north, winning over a few crowds in the musically jaded city of Chicago. after months of saving money, the band booked some recording time at Westend studios in K.C. With master engineer Paul Malinowski at the controls the band banged out seven songs in a scant thirteen hours. the result is the Primer E.P. Primer is an excellent cross section of the bands material, running the gamut between delicate melody to sheer sonic ugliness hitting many points in between. The band is currently shopping around the E.P. in hopes of garnering some label interest and continues to play shows throughout the region. More information can be found here. |
