Press Reviews
Well, you can't say these Beekeepers aren't eclectic: in the first three tracks of this debut CD, the quartet borrows from surf rock, British Invasion by way of the Dandy Warhols, and the acid-damaged psychedelia of Syd Barret. They deliver the hooks, too- in the big chorus of "Happy Now" and in the absurd line "You remind me of Jerry Lewis" (from "Lunatic"). Running through all the tracks is a deep-rooted love for all things Kinks. You can hear this in "Demolished Man", a distant cousin to "Self-Destroyer". Made up of the three Bergamont brothers and drummer Warren Shapiro, all of whom are veterans of various Vancouver bands, the Beekeepers show a lot of songwriting chops on this fine debut. Some of the songs go on too long -"Happy Now" and the surfy "Crash" in particular could benefit from some editing. Otherwise, "...The World Won't Let Me Sleep" is as crafty as British Invasion pop gets these days.-Shawn Conner, The Georgia Straight. Four Vancouver music veterans take a mod trip into British pop of the '60s and come off sounding surprisingly authentic. Spot-on harmonies, sweet hooks and stellar musicianship highlight the songs. There's a distinctly psychedelic twist to tracks like "Lunatic" not only because of the Syd Barret style, but because the track might actually be about him. Other highlights include the speedy pop of "Crash", the Bowie-esque "Demolished Man", a bit of early Who on "Bacon" and ther Kinks storytelling style of "Life In a Cottage" and "For The Love Of Torture." -Ian Danzig, Exclaim. |
