Spanky from the Spankadelic Rock Show Review: Salutation to you all. Spanky here, bringing to you the low-down behind the Asp Soup show this Sunday.
This show was the first of many Call In & Win shows. It went well, but next time I do this, I'll be sure to let you all know a lot earlier in advance so that you can tune in. The response was lower than I expected, and unless a lot of you don't like winning free stuff, I'll have to assume that reminding you 1 hour before the show is just too short a time - especially via e-mail. Hey, I'm just Spanky, I never claimed to be perfect. :)
Anyway, Asp Soup showed up to the studio around 8:30 & gave to me immediately a copy of their first full-length CD, 'All You Can Eat'. This album might be one of the best I've heard for a local band in quite a while - very melodic & lots of good songs, especially 'Wisdom' & their cover of America's 'Sister Golden Hair'. It's not exactly revolutionary, but not all albums have to be to be good. As it stands, I'd buy the album, but since I got a copy for free, I don't have to. Radio does have its perks, y'know.
3/4 of the band paid their respects to the show - the only no-show was Craig, who had to work. Dan, John & Larry (along with the beautiful, but silent, Rachel) can be considered the old guys of the local scene. To put it best, any one of them could've been my dad. As my old man puts it, however, age is just a physical thing, and coolness has nothing to do with age. Besides, some of the guys are big Rush fans, which goes a long way with me. For more on their influences & other stuff, go to www.aspsoup.com.
Asp Soup got their name from the Asp snake, a deadly type of snake, & the soup part is to show how they blend together into one band. I don't know about you guys, but snake soup is not one of my favorite dishes. However, these men do have a very pleasing sound - much more of an old-school, mature sound, which reflects their influences pretty closely. Other people seem to like them, too - they're regulars at the Culture Room, and they average out about 300 people per show. Unfortunately, the majority of their audience lives in Ft. Lauderdale & Davie, and so they weren't able to pick us up via the radio. (You can still pick us up online, however - go to WRGP's website at http://wrgp.fiu.edu. Keep it for future reference.)
The boys acclamated themselves pretty quickly - it never seems to fail, really. It's amazing how some people immediately loosen up around a microphone once you give them a chance to. Dan & John seemed to handle it very well. Others just don't seem interested one way or the other. Larry was the perfect case in point - if you were wondering why he was so quiet, that's 'cause he was looking at my records for the last half-hour of the show. Apparently, he loves my collection a lot. All I'll say to that is, besides the fact that the man obviously has good taste, there's a first time for everything.
