Artist History
A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF RICHARD A. DEDEAUX - A WATTS PROPHET POET Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Richard A. Dedeaux. My family has lived on the Mississippi gulf coast for generations and is one of the oldest and best respected families in the state of Mississippi. In 1953 at age 14, after my mother's death I moved from New Orleans to California with my father and two brothers. I was married at 19 and raised my family in Los Angeles. In 1967 I joined Bud Schoulburg’s Creative Writers Workshop and formed a poetry group called THE WATTS PROPHETS. Collectively we have published three books of poetry, recorded two albums, and were also featured on Quincy Jones MELLOW MADNESS album, and Stevie Wonder’s SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE. We have performed and lectured at many of the major colleges and universities across the country and continue to do so. In 1986 I relocated back to my roots in DeLisle, Mississippi (except like now, for an occasional business trip) and have been there, ever since. It was during this time I developed my unique concept of FRAMABLE PHRASES , which is a collection of 150 8”x10” renderings of my best published and un-published poetry. These exclusive and colorful poems chronicles a twenty six year career as a Watts Prophet Poet. Perhaps distinguished and noted actor Mr Brock Peters best described the poetry of THE WATTS PROPHETS in the introduction of our last book when he said: "....Much of what is accomplished by The Watts Prophets has to be experienced, and they have traveled this nation performing their works for schools, organizations, and many kinds of institutions. In their wake are left hosts of admirers who feel revived and encouraged by their positive and humane gospel.” My poetry is unique and my style of writing pensive. I find myself always searching out life's simple, destiny determining situations and events that often alter lifes' balance. The best way, however, to learn about Richard Dedeaux is to read my poetry yourself. Perhaps you will allow me to entertain you at your next party, gala affair, outdoor activity or, a quiet fireside poetry reading. I promise you won't be disappointed.Richard A. Dedeaux |

Press Reviews
"The poet Richard Dedeaux -- of the Watts Prophets -- goes the Gil Scott-Heron route with a funky but thought provoking collection of jazz, soul and hip-hop. The ironic "Texas Boy" makes fun of macho stereotypes but most tracks have a darker-edged, socio-political agenda. Yep kids, they used to call rap "spoken word" and Dedeaux added his poetry to Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones albums long before you were born." - Listen.com (www.listen.com) |
