    Artist History
Gary Shilling and David Zimmerman first worked together in the early eighties in the performance art groups Street Saints and Anarkos. Gary moved to NYC (has lived there half his adult life) and fell in with the underground art scene there. David played in various garage-rock bands in OKC and Austin: most went nowhere, none went far. In '91, 4-D Men was formed (with Dennis Bixler and Mark Hancock), the first 'real' band Gary and David played in together; it lasted only a few months (Gary split to NYC again) but a decent home recording was done of their set ('Second Story Job'). Eventually Gary came back to OKC. In '94/'95 he and David put together the songs that later became most of Pulpit Red's rep, along with a couple of songs from 4-D Men.Like most bands, the Pulpit Red line-up has been through changes, even breaking up for almost a year. The band really gelled in 1996 when Grendel O'Haolain and Jimmy Sparkles joined on bass and drums. After the split-up, this line-up reformed in March 98, but in May JS announced he was going through with his long-standing goal of moving to Washington state. All but one of the basic tracks for 'LURK' were done in three days just before he left. Beau Turkey replaced him on drums and played on 'Zero Night', done as we were about to mix the rest of the songs. Our current drummer is Dan Francis, formerly with Ancient Chinese Penis (now Fuckface). All lyrics by Gary Shilling except Zero Night, Venus & Mercury by David Zimmerman;Produced by Wes Sharon and Pulpit Red; Engineered, Recorded, and Mixed by Wes Sharon at the Devil's Workshop, OKC;Cover painting by Gary Shilling; Band photo by Kedron Fisher
