Artist History
From the Eastern Townships (Waterloo, Quebec; Canada). Have played many years in the Townships & Local Montreal scene.
Had a single released on Aquarius Records and two albums released independently over the years. Possibly the first band in Canada and maybe in the U.S. to release an independent album. Were booked and promoted by "Donald K Donald" playing along side of "April Wine" and "Mashmakan". Maurice has gained recognition for songs he has written, receiving awards from the Canadian Council of the Arts and the Governor General.
Over the years Oliver Klaus has mainly produced independent product. They worked with many professionals: studio producer & engineer Andre Perry [John Lennon/Give Peace a Chance], studio producer & engineer John Stewart [George Harrison/Apple Scruffs], International Promoter Donald K Donald, and others who came to respect their attitude; but always reverted to form, preferring home and family and a normal lifestyle to life on the road. They also like the control independence gave them.

Press Reviews
OLIVER KLAUS RELEASES CD:
The Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada, is still excited over the return of Oliver Klaus after an absence of 17 years. Since their return concert took place at the Maison de la Culture (Masonic Temple), in Waterloo, Quebec, 1995, the band has recorded and released a C.D. entitled Homeless, featuring great new material. This socially conscious album (a blend of Rock, Country, Blues and Folk) reflects a Townships band with a Townships sound.
The Singfield brothers from Waterloo, still providing the core of Oliver Klaus after thirty years (Maurice & Bryan, Julian is Maurice's son), are creating waves once again on the local Quebec Indie scene.
Talking about his songs, Maurice points out that "the most important thing in my career is the love of song writing." In 1972, he was one of the winners of the Hear Canada Singing contest, which included receiving an award from the Canadian Council of the Arts for his song Eastern Townships Land (a song on the Homeless C.D.), an appearance on the Ian Tyson Show, and having Stomping Tom Connors perform the song. In 1992, he won a people's choice award from the Governor General, for a music video of his song You've got a land. He entered it in the Canadian Video Challenge, part of the celebrations for the 125th anniversary of Canada.
Bryan recalls: " When we didn't have work we put on our own shows and when we wanted to record we built our own studio. Maurice always had an interest in recording, which led us to build our first studio and produce our first independent album thirty years ago . That this record (now a collectors item) has ended up in places like Amsterdam, London and Australia continues to amaze me." According to Frank Manley from No-Exit Records, the company that re-released the album in its original vinyl form in 1996, "Oliver Klaus could possibly be the first band in Canada and maybe the United States to have released an independent album."
Famous International promoter, Donald K. Donald, describes the band as follows: "You know, Oliver Klaus was a fantastic group. I have heard a couple of tracks from their new album Homeless and I think it's so timely it's right on. In the music business things become cyclical and just like Oliver Klaus were ahead of their time 30 yrs ago, they're just right in tune today. They're possibly a little touch ahead, but I think the world is going to catch up to them."
