Artist History
Like a dying star, Method Engine seems at times doomed to collapse beneath their own emotional weight-- until finally, at the point of critical mass, their music bursts forth in a cataclysm of sound -- ushering in the group's vision of a world shaking with uncertainty. Emerging in an age when rock-and-roll has often been given up for dead, the post-grunge, emo-tinged rock of Method Engine scoffs at the recent proliferation of sound-bytes and epileptic videos.
In this prefabricated pop era, it is rare to find a band composed of such equal and diverse talents. All band members play guitar, and each musician is constantly bringing new songwriting ideas to the table. The tension that arises from this mixture of varying musical backgrounds cannot be hidden. Every song is both a tribute to this bending of wills and a desperate, gut-wrenching attempt to sustain the union the foursome has created. With back-breaking force, Hans and Art pound out a rhythm that contains the sort of raw energy found in only the most aggressive styles of music. And, yet, it is somehow a controlled chaos that they manipulate-- held together by the technique and precision usually reserved for jazz. On top of this foundation, David and John's guitars seek to build a sonic wave that soaks the listener's every pore. In the space of an instant, their guitar inter-play has the potential to lash out with the fury of a solar flare, or slowly hypnotize a listener into a state of musical delirium. Finally, John's searing vocals and intense lyrics expose the dark secrets and disturbed recesses of human emotion.
Method Engine has been playing in San Francisco for the past two years, quickly establishing a name for itself in the Bay Area. As with every other aspect of Method Engine, the band's live performances are carefully crafted to pack a singular, hard-hitting punch. Not content to be thought of as ordinary background music, Method Engine shows are always voluptuous and penetrating.
The band performed at last year's tribute to artistic expression, the Burning Man festival, in Black Rock City, Nevada, and recently completed its first recording at Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope studios. If this three-song demo is any indication (over 1,000 MP-3 downloads in the first five weeks), the atom has been split - a new form of musical energy has been unleashed upon the world. Its source... Method Engine. |
