Press Reviews
CD: "Too Much Imagination" (Smoove Productions)By: Heidi DrockelmanIndie-Music.com Wow. And let me just get this out of the way at the start, because I'm POSITIVE they've heard this before, but this is probably one of the most talented groups to come out of the Northeast since Live broke out with their first disc. The comparisons are bound to happen in regard to their single "dreams", which has been burning up airwaves and clubs in Philadelphia (at many of my old haunts after looking at their website, www.jelbait.com - and Live is from York, PA, a hop skip and jump from Philly) simply due to the fact that singer Jeff Preston bears an uncanny vocal resemblance to Ed Kowalczyk. Similarly on the song "The Desperate Measure", which has a boldness and unique song style that is very reminiscent of early Live work. Another resemblance is the bursting earnestness and talent that they possess. But the comparison stops there for several reasons. Despite his similarities to the Live frontman, vocalist Jeff Preston really sings with the chops of a seasoned professional. There is a bigness and boldness to his voice, but a tone that just drips from his tongue as smooth as honey. With additional vocals by bassist Tony Germinario, the harmonies that come out on this disc are truly near-miraculous in their delivery and really do the job in taking these songs to a much higher plane. Everything, pardon the pun, jels on this disc, from start to finish. And while the sound of the band remains fairly intact throughout, there are enough kinks and turns to keep the sound fresh and allows them the ability to experiment with harder sounds and tones on occasion. For the most part, the songs are all radio-accessible and it's clear that the recent industry buzz surrounding JEL is due to the fact that there are "hits" all over this record. Someone is going to make a lot of money off these guys someday, and my guess is sooner than later. On a disc laden with strong tracks, the opener, "What kind of mood?", complete with raging guitar riff and a hook that doesn't quit, yanks the listener in and doesn't let go, follows with "dreams", "down in the dirt", "renew" and leaves a number of strong tunes in the wake. "Suburban Legend" is a strong track, as is "Paint", two of my current favorites. This is power-pop at its finest and most potent. While this disc will certainly seal JEL as an indie darling on a much wider scale, they probably won't be indie for much longer - Too Much Imagination just has exactly that. Creative and just great quality pop doesn't come along as often as everyone thinks, you just have to turn on the radio these days to understand that. There're a lot of mediocre offerings out there right now, and JEL stands as a giant lightning rod from the pop heavens. And they stand to become huge stars as well. The last time I said this about anyone was in regard to a pre-press disc I heard from a band named Bush before their first album came out. I feel like I've had the privilege of discovering the next big thing once again.Seek out www.jelbait.com if you like your pop powerful, sincere, and imaginative.Artist Website: http://www.jelbait.com/ "JEL is basically Guster crossed with Toad The Wet Sprocket on anti-depressants. Hooky harmonies and great songwriting." Jason Notte - Go Out! Magazine "Jel is for sure the band to watch in the millennium. The name of the band holds true for a pop group with true cohesiveness and extraodinary musicianship. Great catchy, soon to be top 40 hits with an edge, smooth vocals by the enticing Jeff Preston, and a band with great business savvy and marketability make them a sure bet in the O-DECADE." -Denise Gerardi, producer GNYC TV’s--ROCKIN'CLUBS on Time Warner Cable"JEL brings to Eureka Joe Live - House Blend their own unique blend of melodic pop rock. Their strength lies in their ability to turn the experiences of life, love, loss and chance into down-to-earth, moving songs that connect emotionally with the audience." -Nicole Rivard- Flatiron News "JEL has developed a distinctive sound. Mixing the energy and cutting edge sound of today’s alternative rock with carefully crafted lyrics and melodies, the band has succeeded in creating a sound much like that of today’s most popular bands without giving up uniqueness.
