    Press Reviews
insurgentcountry.com (Markus Rill): This record takes you to unknown territory. You can tell from the first few seconds of minor-key banjo-picking that there's a special atmosphere to Jeff Krebs's music. The arrangements are so full of unusual ideas, listening to this record would seriously screw up a middle-of-the-road radio listener. The title song "Keep An Eye Out" is downright scary with its hypnotic rumbling beat, "Tango Delle Rose" is a--surprise--klezmer tango and other songs are just impossible to describe. Still, "Keep An Eye Out" is not just an assortment of weird ideas. Krebs isn't out to impress but to present his songs. And fine songs they are. The Wurlitzer-driven "Emily Take It Back" and the laid-back "Another Piece of Me" are undeniably catchy; the title song and "Up In The Old Hotel" provide you with haunting melodies for your next walk alone through the woods. But Krebs's voice is something to hold onto, your soothing and comforting guide through his world. (...) "Keep An Eye Out" is a real remarkable record, and Jeff Krebs a highly original artist. ///////////// Alternative Press (Jim Santo): The man is a first-rate storyteller, razor-sharp and darkly funny in the tradition of John Prine and--dare I say it?--Bob Dylan. Lose your preconceptions about singer/songwriters and acoustic guitars; Krebs hits like a mouthful of tequila. /////////// splendidezine.com (Ron Davies) Though he hails from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Jeff Krebs' second solo disc (Keep an Eye Out) has the murky feel of the deep South. Banjos, accordions and swampy melodies drive this music, which sucks you in like the bayous of Louisiana. From the rail-yard sing-along "Emily Take It Back" to the ghostly march "The Same Train", Krebs takes listeners on a dusty ride through the back woods and captures the feel of the musical varieties that thrive in the humid heat. He even detours through Mexico for the Latin-tinged "Extravagaria!" and adds a flamenco touch to "Tango delle Rose". While he can certainly drop names well (he played with Art Alexakis (Everclear) and Kyle Statham (F*ck) in the alt-country band The Easy Hoes), Krebs' songs are so close to perfection that this coat-tailing is unnecessary. Sharing producer Kevin Ink with Mark Eitzel, Krebs slides easily into either the singer/songwriter or the country category. His musical tales, however, are powerful enough to easily transcend such narrow confines. /////////// altcountrytab.com:The album (Keep An Eye Out) opens up with a banjo intro to a title track that sets the tone for the album with a mellow yet haunting edgy vocal over immaculately played Americana. "Emily Take It Back" adds a little humor and a great hook before the album highlight arrives with "Up In The Old Hotel", an almost gothic story of hotel residents, including a suicide victim found much too late. The melancholy mood continues on "Another Piece", and "Apache Boulevard" reminds me of Richard Buckner in its lyrical style. "Extravagaria!" could be "the Sadies" as a instrumental bit of latin-surf. The latin style continues with "Tango Delle Rose", reworked with lyrics provided by Jeff Krebs. "Pull" and "The Same Train" show folk-roots but with much rockier backing and punchy drum beats. "Problem by the Door" continues his compelling mix of sad stories told over impressive melodies. In summary the album has a lot to recommend it. It has some of the style and eerie beauty that remind me of the likes of Vic Chesnutt, Calexico, Willard Grant Conspiracy or Lambchop. "Up In The Old Hotel" is one of the best tracks I've heard in a long time and if you like those sort of artists then I would point you towards this album, it's a fine album. ////////// musicemissions.com: Jeff Krebs has what it takes to write a great rootsy pop song and the voice to deliver it. Krebs has the ability to go from a completely Americana track straight to a Latin-tinged salsa. He has the sincerity of a man who has nothing left to hide. Jeff lets out all his secrets on this album (Keep an Eye Out) and isn't ashamed of any of them. And he shouldn't be either because he is a fantastic songwriter as is demonstrated on this disc. Besides the guitar, he uses drum loops, banjo, mandolin, harp, and loads of others to create this great album. ///////// rambles.net (Robert Buck): "Keep An Eye Out" is the third and most recent release by singer-songwriter Jeff Krebs. Jeff spent his childhood years in the Midwest, part of a family that played old-time Americana music; however, Jeff emigrated to San Francisco, the place he now calls home, some dozen years ago. Although Krebs is generally classified as a singer-songwriter, there is certainly nothing mundane or repetitive about his music. Jeff is adept at playing anything from old-time American music to edgy folk-rock, with all stops in between. At the same time, one can hear elements of world music, particularly that of Latin America, in his work. Krebs' lyrics have a razor edge to them, and are often bitingly satirical, but always with a leavening dose of humor. Krebs has a really smooth voice that will take the listener through some dark places, but those dark places are almost invariably tinged with an element of hope. The tone of Keep An Eye Out is set with the opening title track, "Keep an Eye Out," which mixes old-time banjo with folk-rock electric guitar, and does so very effectively. While there are no "throwaway" tracks among the dozen found on Keep An Eye Out, standout tracks are "Up in the Old Hotel," "Another Piece," "Tango Delle Rose," "Pull," "Problem By the Door" and "Sweet Dreams." "Apache Boulevard" and "The Same Train" are the two exceptionally well-crafted songs found on this album. Those who are already familiar with Jeff Krebs' work will be well pleased with Keep An Eye Out. Those who have yet to discover Jeff Krebs will want to take this opportunity to do so.
