Press Reviews
GhoulspoonFever(Insomniac)***1/2 Ghoulspoon's new EP picks up where 1996's Medication left off - with six self-described "infinite horrophonic hypnovision" tunes, featuring the heavy grooves that made that record a local hit. Most of the songs on Fever will sound familiar to fans of the band's live show, including a headbanging cover of the Cars' '80s chestnut, "You're All I've Got Tonight," and "Suspension," which smoothly slips from dub to death-metal and back - testifying to the band's tightly-honed virtuosity, a product of its seven years' experience. Although Zach Goode's rhythmic vocal jabs often recall Rage Against the Machine's raps, and drummer Jason Vick at times sounds like an A+ pupil of the Deftones' Abe Cunningham, what sets Ghoulspoon apart from the metal masses is its smart use of ska elements, which provide the songs with breathing space and a forum for melody. Instead of using reggae/ska as a crutch or gimmick to fall back on, Ghoulspoon treats it more as a backdrop or springboard for the band's pithier riffage. The body-movin' title track showcases Ghoulspoon at its best - Rice's funky basslines navigate through thrash intensity and spacey ska; Goode alternates intense rapping with evocative, powerful singing in a particularly anthemic chorus; and guitarists Jeremy Ronstadt and J Cooper provide dynamic shifts with distorted power chords and an understated, slippery solo. Despite four San Diego Music Award nominations, regular song samplings on Jim Rome's nationally syndicated sports show, and spots opening for the likes of 311, Korn, and fellow San Diego rockers Sprung Monkey, commercial success has thus far eluded Ghoulspoon, one of this city's very few talented, heavy bands. "I never wanted any more than just everything" Goode declares on "Suspension." And, as hip-hoppy nu-metal increasingly takes center stage, he could still get just that, and the national attention Ghoulspoon deserves.- Matthew KalinowskiSLAMM Magazine Dec 15, 1999 |
