    Artist History
Four guys living in Nashville not playing country music. Okay, maybe a few more details are in order... The story of Duraluxe began early in 1997 in Nashville, TN. Producer / Engineer Chris Colbert and his friend Troy Daugherty began messing around with a 1966 Rhythm Ace drum machine and an ADAT. The two humans began writing songs and before long they'd sunk their life savings into their own studio. With the addition of more humans, the machines were shown the door and Duraluxe was born. For ex-Los Angeleno Chris Colbert, Duraluxe is the culmination of a decade of work producing and engineering recordings for artists like Mineral, Pave The Rocket, Social Distortion, Adolescents and Morella's Forest. Chris has also lent his touch to recordings by top-selling Christian rock artists like The Prayer Chain and The Choir because after all, Nashville is bible country. A touching anecdote from Colbert's career: In 1996 he was engineering a Sex Pistols performance for MTV's 120 Minutes when, after arguing with Kurt Loder, Johnny Rotten decided to storm off the stage. Colbert's simple request that Rotten return the microphone ("Hey rockstar, nice pants") was graciously granted with "Sod off, asshole." Brings a tear to the eye, doesn't it ? Troy Daugherty, too, has been touched by an angel. Around the time he and Colbert formed Duraluxe, Daugherty was contacted by a Christian pop artist named Miss Angie (It seems there was a real lack of death metal bands to work with in Nashville around that time). The singer was having difficulty finding the right music for a more upbeat, more "rock" song for her next album. Daugherty quickly formulated some ideas and within a few days he'd laid down all the tracks for the song "Lift My Eyes", which would go on to top the Christian Adult Contemporary charts and pay Daugherty's bills for the next few years. By 1998 Duraluxe included Daugherty's Evansville, Indiana friend Tommy Wedge on bass and ex- NY State native Fred McKay on drums, and the band began playing out in the south and the midwest. By the end of the year they'd recorded the album "Dolorosa", the result of two sessions, one in Nashville and the other in Chicago. The Nashville sessions were produced, mixed and engineered by Colbert and Daugherty in their studio, which is not -so -coincidentally named Dolorosa. The Chicago sessions were produced and mixed by studio veteran Keith Cleversley (Spiritualized, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev). Cleversley and Colbert had both produced records for Morella's Forest, Duraluxe were influenced by many of the bands Cleversley had worked with, and it's obvious from the first listen that the match between band and producer is a natural. The union of the two sessions is a powerful blend : power-pop hooks abound in songs like "Shady Mess" and "Lowly Creatures"; the hopeful and spiritual side of the band is apparent in songs like "Change Your Mind"; space-rock sounds dominate other tracks like "Queen of Centerville" and the psychedelic anthem "In Time"; more than a little hometown flavor is evident on the steel guitar-graced "Don't Hesitate". With "Dolorosa", the band set out to make an album that translated their feelings of time and place and their sense of the world. The album is the reflection of their world. Should this sound a bit too deep and meaningful, we will just add that live, DURALUXE TOTALLY ROCK !!!

    Press Reviews
"When I received this record in the mail, I jokingly said to myself, "Hey check it out, it’s a Superdrag rip-off band." Then I listened to the record and found out I was right- sort of. If Duraluxe does emulate a band like Superdrag it is only in the way that makes Superdrag so good. Duraluxe likes to rock, Superdrag likes to rock. But Duraluxe pushes the envelope a bit further than Superdrag in that they take more chances. They invite some of their friends to join in with them. Especially effective is the inclusion of Rachel McClain, whose sweet vocals often act as a wonderful foil to lead singer Troy Daugherty’s agitated lead vocals, especially on the closing track "Seeing Me." Maybe Superdrag should take a hint or two from these guys." - Brandt Fundak from Pop Culture Detox "It seems that Duraluxe grew up closer to the school of Swervedriver gazing than the school of Grifters' hard knocks which they claim company to. However, I hear that Scott Taylor from The Grifters is a big fan and well he sould be. This is a substantially potent record from a smart, unassuming, ass-kicking rock band. Don't miss a beat, you may just find yourself lying on the couch with a bong at your feet." - from Radio Stethoscope
