Artist description
Devics pronounced Deeevix play a moody blend of jazz, flamenco,
and lush guitar jangle, with smoky iridescent female and
sometimes male vocals. Their music has often been likened to the
moody music of David lynch mixed with cabaret sounds of old and
an explosive edge thrown in to make sure no one is sleeping during
the ride. |

Artist History
In 1989 Dustin O'Halloran and Sara Lov met at College in an art
class. They soon dropped out of school to pursue making music
together. In 1991, they were joined by bassist Frank Aguilar and
drummer Evan Schnabel. The four of them played together for
about 3 years and released several demo tapes. In 1994, Devics
created Splinter Records as a means to release their own music.
Their first release (1994) was a 7” single called “Peresoso” b/w
Spooky which quickly sold out and was sent to the presses for
more. Devics began to develop a devoted following in the Los
Angeles area. In 1995 Frank left the band. When the right bass
player was no where to be found, Lov took over the bass duties.
The band was now a trio. Lov never intended on being the
permanent bassist but it seemed to work well for a while.
In 1996 the trio compiled an extremely heartfelt and poignant release; the
stunning debut CD “Buxom” The album was met with
encouraging sales and reviews. In their second and latest full
length CD “If You Forget Me…”(1998) The band pushed the
envelope by adding various instruments such as piano, chambelin,
hammond B3, pump organ and steel guitar all played by
O’Halloran, some outside help from upright bass players Landon
Donsbach, James Brenner and Dan Enriquez, a tenor sax played by
Liam Phillpot Curan and an amazing producer named Tracy
Chisholm who along with doing a amazing job recording the band
also played his theramin on the title track and added some
percussion on the song “Afraid Of Loving You”. Tracy is known
for his work on the first Belly album (Star), American Music Club,
and Scott Weiland. Devics loved working with Tracy and plan to
do their next album with him. “If You Forget Me…” is an
impressive show of the bands maturity and growth.
By late 1998, the Devics became frustrated. Their live sound was full but the
band felt it was necessary to incorporate some of the album’s
extras into their live show. After 3 years of playing bass, Lov also
decided it was time to give up the bass in order to give more
attention to the vocals. In early 1999 Devics were joined by
bassist Ed Maxwell. |

DEVICS
If You Forget Me… (Splinter)
If You Forget Me… is Los Angeles’s Devics’ torchy testament to the fact that everything that glitters in the land of excess isn’t gold. Administered by the sorrowful soprano of singer Sara Lov, the trio’s dark ballads excel at telling seething tales of love-gone- wrong, bolstered by talented, expertly arranged multi-instrumental backing. Guitarist Dustin O'Halloran peppers the album with everything from steel guitar and piano to pump organ, chamberlin and Hammond B3 organ (not to mention a haunting voc\al turn on “Siren Song”), and the sleepy, brushed drumming of Evan Schnabel steadies the smoky mood throughout Lov'’ compelling heartbreaks. Perfect for heavy-lidded cocktail sipping in adult establishments of ill repute. DEVICS
If You Forget Me… CD
Tragic, tearful and truly remarkable, the DEVICS continue to sublimely blast the senses with such passion as to even bring tears to my eyes. The silkiness of Sara Lov’s voice is on a par with the previously inimitable Lady Day, and along with the incredible music and superb writing talents of her colleagues, this project continues to be one of my favourite local bands. There is a darkness here that is highly desirable, and the reminiscence of the 1920s – sans the flappers and Fitzgerald’s Gatsbian naivete – is one that is incredible. An absolutely amazing album.
