Artist description
Guitarist Robert Gomez is well on his way to establishing himself as a world class guitarist, composer, and bandleader. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas the 25 year-old Gomez currently resides in New York City where he performs in variety of settings. Robert is equally at home in a straight-ahead jazz setting, such as his own group the Robert Gomez Trio, as he is in the eclectic jazz and alternative rock group Overground. Robert is also a seasoned musician in the afro-Cuban jazz genre, having lead his own award winning Cuban music ensemble Rob G and the Latin Pimps in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Robert began studying classical guitar at age six and continued his education in both classical and jazz music under the direction of such teachers as Rufus Reid, Harold Mabern, Fred Hamilton, and Tom Johnson.
While a student at the University of North Texas, the band which Robert lead as guitarist and singer, Rob G and the Latin Pimps, received an award from the Dallas Observer for "Best Latin Group 1999". That same year he received a similar award from the Fort Worth Weekly.
Since moving to New York in February of 2000 Robert has been busy composing for his New York based trio as well as writing songs and lyrics for Overground. The Robert Gomez Trio has performed at Cleopatra's Needle, The Park Avalon, The Blue Water Grill, and The Manhattan Bistro. This trio features Robert on nylon stringed guitar with acoustic bass and drums. Gomez's unique guitar style incorporates a classical aesthetic along with jazz and world music traditions to make memorable and musical solos. Bass virtuoso Mike McGuirk and drummer Bill Campbell compose the rest of the trio that works consistently in Manhattan.
In Overground Robert is able to use these same skills in a different fashion. Overground are a quartet that features a singer/saxophonist, acoustic and electric bass, and drums. Robert is able to use his skills as a composer in this group as well as his improvising abilities on guitar, and his expertise on the traditional Cuban tres guitar. Gomez's extensive use of nylon stringed guitars, as well as electric guitars makes him a standout among both jazz and rock guitarists.
In April, Gomez was busy recording the first album with Overground at 311's Hive Studio in Los Angeles. Also during this trip Overground performed at The Roxy in Los Angeles as well as the Key Club. The new Overground album was produced by 311 front man Nick Hexum. Overground is currently in negotiation with several record companies.
Robert has recorded with tres guitarist Nelson Gonsalez, a regular with Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, and Israel "Cachao" Lopez. Robert has also released a CD available from MP3.com with Rob G and the Latin Pimps entitled "El Borracho."
These various accomplishments are only part of the story of Robert Gomez's musicianship. Robert is a thoughtful and intuitive musician who has profound control over his instrument, he is pushing the envelope of jazz and rock music using his own developed musical identity.
