Artist History
Okay boys and girls, the History of Formula316 goes back to the days when formula316 was Insideout. Ohhhhhh yeah, remember that.... Well, Insideout started with Jonathan Jones, Matt O'Neil, and Wes Udwin. We all got our instruments around the same time and it just so happened that our church was doing a youth service and our youth pastor asked us if we would like to play. We said that we would get back to her because so far our band had just been all talk. Band???? This was a new one for all of us. We knew how to play our own instruments, but had never played them with other people. So the following weekend after we had talked to our youth pastor and said we would play, we decided that it was time we give this band "thing" a go. We all went over to Matt's dad's house because that was where his drums were and his dad probably wanted to get a good laugh for the night. When we got to his dad's house, we set up our equipment. Wes had two little 10-20 watt practice amps that we went out of. Our first song that was ever played was a cover of "Jesus Loves Me" to a rock beat. After that, I knew that this band was something special....... So we started out covering praise songs and then graduated into writing our own songs (Jonathan's Songs mostly) untill we felt that we were ready to record. On Christmas of 97 we came out with our fist demo tape for 100$. It was the biggest piece of crap in the world, but at the time it was the greatest thing ever. Well, I think between 97-98 we had 2 shows, but by the Christmas of 98 we were ready to record again..and we did. On Christmas of 98, we went into Studio West to waste our money. We really got ripped of badly and came out with another piece of crap that cost us 1000$. That was all of our allowance!!!!!! This led me to believe that you should be careful when your going to record make sure your getting your money's worth. Don't let studio west take your money!!! In the spring of 99 a big thing happened to our band. I, Jonathan, took Jazz ensemble at my school. On the first day of class, we were asked to sign up for an instrument that we felt the most comfortable to play. Well, of course I signed up for keyboard along with another guy named Scott Gibson. It was band love at first sight. Scott was just good at everything and one day I told him about Insideout and how we needed a bass player, hoping he would say, oh I would love to play for you. To my surprise he answered like typical Scott by saying "Ummmmmm well I'm really busy let me checkout my schedule and I'll get back to you". Well there was hope....so Scott probably went home and asked his mommy and the next day gave me the okay. Scott totally changed our band from a keyboard based band with no bass player, to a more Alternative sounding, better band. It was amazing playing with him. He always had something to say about a song and he made every song of ours 100% better. So there we were, Insideout. We played around a little and every now and then went up to LA. Those were the good old days. In the winter of 2000 Insideout went into the studio at our school where we came out with a 4 song demo that was actually not that shabby (and didn't cost us anything either). Then another huge event happened in our band history. Wes, our Guitar player, decided to resign because of the pressures of school, his parents, and for the most part he was on the school baseball team and he couldn't do both band and baseball. I remember the night that he called me and told me the news. I must have cried for about a week straight because it was so sad seeing my best friend leave the band. We had had so many good times together. Never the less, the band went on for a month or two with me panicking because we had had to cancel shows and we needed a guitar player. Or did we..... This is when Scott switched from the bass to the Guitar and Andy came along. We met Andy through Matt because they had been friends since they were little bitty boys. Andy was a match made in heaven. This guy knew all our bass lines note for note because he had gone to most of our shows. Not to mention he was just really excited. This was what he was praying for. He wanted to be in a band that was serious. We then decided (with some help from another, more well established band called InsideOut) that it would be a good idea to change our name. So we changed our name to formula316 and our style changed too. After a few weeks in Exum recording studio, 2 months later we came out with our album now: Coming Home. So there you guys/gals have it the whole history in a nut shell. Anyone who read this is hardcore and formula316 thanks you. Have a good day. |
