    Artist History
Andy Gurleys' first guitar came as a gift for his 14th birthday, after spending some time with his Uncle James from Janis Joplin's band Big Brother. By age 15 he had taught himself to play lead and rhythm parts on entire rock albums. His first gig came at age 15, when he auditioned and got the lead for a seasoned rock group. Since that time Gurley has become widely respected for both his playing and his extensive musical abilities.Gurley graduated Magna Cum Laude from Lambuth College, and went on to graduate with Honors from the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles CA. After G.I.T., Gurley toured with many well known artists. While in LA Gurley studied and performed with Joe Pass, Scott Henderson, Robben Ford, Steve Vai and Jeff BerlinGurley has shared the stage with such great musicians as Bob Hope, Eric Johnson, Eric Clapton, and Willie Nelson, to name a few. Gurley also become well known for his front man position in his own group, The Andy Gurley Band. The Andy Gurley Band includes a revolving list of members, as well as set lists that cover most every genre of popular music. They performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, in Switzerland while touring Europe. In 1997 The Andy Gurley Blues Project held the opening spot for the pop band Sister Hazel. Gurley now plays all styles and genre of guitar including: studio, jazz, classical, pedagogy, theory, rock, blues, fusion, acoustic and bass. He has also become a heavily sought after master guitar instructor at Mars Music Nashville.Gurley's latest project is an alternative rock CD with vocals. Although the project is only up to demo, management of Gurley's career was immediately taken upon hearing the rough demo tracks. The manager is quoted as saying “ The talent is so above what is on the market right now, it’s the next generation.” Gurley's alt/rock album will include the recently unleashed vocalist, while consistently showcasing Gurley's unbelievable guitar workWhile Gurley can definitely captivate audiences of the acoustic stage, the electric jazz he plays is undeniable. Whether he’s following the form of the great Jazz Masters, or letting that form lead him into a fusion of music, it is all a part of the greater whole that makes Gurley so versatile. His passions as “the rock star” certainly demonstrates his chameleon like stage presence abilities. The physical energy runs so high in this setting, memories of Woodstock come to mind. As Gurley takes command of the music, he ultimately leads it into a full-blown, guitar throwing, back fed, electric love affair, leaving his guitar so out of kilter, Gurley himself must feel Hendrix has passed this way before. And while Gurley stands on his shaken guitar, still feeding back the last note, you feel lucky to be witnessing something so extraordinary, so genuine, so pure as----- true musical genius……….

    Press Reviews
Marge Hofacre's Jazz News 1995 Nov/ Dec Issue # 81"Andy Gurley is a heck of a versatile player bringing to mind Les Dudek, John McLaughlin and Lindsey Buckingham .............Useless Wooden Toy leans more toward rock than anything else, but is also show's off Gurley's chops as a true jazz player....... He floats from subtle fusion harmonies to McLaighlinesque broken lines ......His imaginative programming keeps the drum machine from sounding like a machine........Slim Pickens is a hell bent for leather country song that sounds like Chet Atkins on a caffeine high....Green Dolphin Street is smoky and moody, where Gurley makes pretty use of harmonics and chord voices........... Amazing Grace makes for a lovely ending to a wonderful collection as varied as a Whitman's Sampler..........Gurley is what is referred to in the industry as a "guitar player's guitar player", meaning one who makes his peers sit up and take note" Guitar Magazine's Editor and Chief John StixComments written to Gurley after a 1998 performance"Good show, I do like them talking fingers"The Nashville Scene March 9, 2000 Ron Wynn/ Jazz critic " Andy Gurley experiments with several musical idioms on his latest album..... writing and producing 8 of the 10 tracks.......the best numbers include the title track Axis and Samantha's Eyes, Gurley displays a nimble approach and some very delicate and introspective phrasing............His mass dexterity and speed are highlighted on Whisper's and Silhouettes........ his interpretation of Amazing Grace works well.... his playing is free and aggressive .......Useless Wooden Toy clicks and will appeal." - 2 -September 6, 2000
