Artist description
Composer, producer and pianist Miguel Romero was born in Cuba. Miguel's
band, simply known as "Romero" is based in Atlanta, where they play to
standing room only crowds. "Opening with the hot, fast, funky and
rhythmically complex "Descarga Palmieri," Romero's new cd Cuban Jazz
Funk sets the pace for a great Latin Jazz release that remains true to its
name." Descarga.com
Cuban Jazz Funk was produced by Romero and is a
truly independent release on his own label Alafia.
The band's sound has been compared to everything from a fine Cuban
cigar that is spicy and lingers in the air to a Latin Medeski Martin and Wood.
"Hear the solid Cuban style piano of Romero blending with an array of
grooves from straight-ahead jazz to deep funk" Performer Magazine
Romero joins the ranks of Chucho Valdes and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
Romero comes from a long line of musicians who played nightly at the
Tropicana. He studied at the famed Harlem Jazz Mobile with such greats as
Max Roach, Sonny Redd and Freddie Waites. Romero went on to study at
Lehman College in the Bronx and graduated with a B.S. degree in Music
Composition. He also studied the Schillinger System of Musical Composition
with Bob Bianco. He studied big band arranging and film scoring with Don
Sebesky.
Romero and his first cd Island Breeze were voted one of the top 15
Independent and Budding Artists of 1999 by Fred Scott. Both Island Breeze
and Cuban Jazz Funk feature all original compositions by Romero.
"Cuban Jazz Funk" was done in the studio live with all cuts being first takes.
