Press Reviews
Eastbay Express Review (Hearsay, March 31, 2000)"Eleven songs deep down in the folk groove from 26-year-old Berkeley homegirl, Rachel Garlin, who, with tender melodies and a spare, graceful sense of funk, pulls off a debut album that is intimate and accomplished. Garlin's themes are fresh and often unexpectedly moving: the friendships of thirteen-year-old girls, her grandmother's dancing, a little boy worrying about the vandals who dump their garbarge on his family's lawn. Her love songs ache over long-distance relationships, or relationships that didn't quite happen. She takes the last song, "Every Day," into a reworking of "You Are My Sunshine," and leaves it beautifully unresolved on the line, "You'll never know dear, how much I loved you." This is great folksinging, ambitious and joyful. Check Garlin out at her Ashkenaz show on April 9." --Cullen Gerst San Francisco Bay Guardian (April 5, 2000)"The 21st century is new enough that modern folk music, you know, young people playing their laptops, hasn't totally eclipsed the 20th-century variety. Just listen to Rachel Garlin's first album if you want proof. Garlin, who's got a strong voice, an eye for detail, and red roots, writes finely etched, understated songs ("Rain" and "Southwest" are particularly strong) that respect the folk tradition, a feat rarely accomplished outside Berkeley (her hometown) and Cambridge, Mass. (her college town). This folkier-than-most collection manages to touch singer-songwriter bases as far back as Woody Guthrie without bogging down in the saccharine indulgences that too often go with the turf. There's already a fair distance between Green Light Distance and where music is going, but the album shows that it's a mistake to leave everything behind."--Arlene Adler |
