Press Reviews
"A cross-country memoir dotted with field recordings from an electronic landscape, Snakes & Umbrellas pastes together the geography of American music seamlessly. Nick Jaina amasses Jazz, Folk, Blues and Rock into the studio and manages to keep them in the same room for the duration of the album. Songs shift in feel from the jazzier moments of “John Coltrane” and “Tsunami”, to the Waits-ian blues of “Dream of the Screw”, to the gothic folk of “Lindy Freidenfelt”. It’s all held together by the sprinkled sounds of synths and moogs and by Jaina’s rough, breathy voice (perhaps how Tom Waits sounded before puberty hit so hard). His lyrics are snapshots from travels and memory, and he ponders such things as what a movie theatre-turned-funeral home will put on the marquee, and how at a certain moment, one third of the world is sleeping. His rousing knack for details alone places him above most singer-songwriters. If this description sounds like Pavement, you wouldn’t be too far off. There is definitely a resemblance. However, with the ability to produce such a perfect good-night song as “My Love For You Will Bury Me”, Nick Jaina proves his voice distinctive." -Skyscraper #8 |
