This isn’t hippy-bull****, either. There’s nothing else in the world that can be used for such a variety of purposes, if for any purpose at all. More often than not, nowadays, music is for celebration. It could be a Kool-and-the-Gang-stye celebration, or it could be one man celebrating his gangsta-hood. Music is also a strange territory to be explored and studied like a science. But this strange territory could exist just to run through with the sole purpose of getting lost. In Hendrix’s time, many rediscovered that music had the ability to be a weapon in an arsenal as well. Songs could spread news and rally forces, yet it could also confuse or demoralize the enemy, (like when the ATF agents blasted obnoxious oldies at Koresh’s compound in Waco.) Some still utilize this ability in music. Rage Against The Machine comes to mind, reminding all of us that there "can’t be another Vietnam in Mexico." But even here on the local level, some musicians aren’t just seeking personal fame. Some are bringing awareness to a political or social cause. One of those local artists is Jonathan Mark Kimble, also known as Milagro. An efficient and self-contained solo artist, Jonathan uses his smarts to snag great gigs. He’s traveled with Grammy nominated Hip-Hop Group. He’s also galavanted along the east coast performing at conventions of thousands, he’s played in the projects of Mexico, as well as block parties here in Baltimore. His roots are Nicaraguan and Native American, and he began very young singing for the church choir and playing various talent shows. He sings, he plays, he drums. His music is minimalistic, reminiscent of Sade and other R&B, but he paints his songs with Ambient rhythms. Many should know what I mean when I say it’s fantastic f*** music. This may sound crude, but it’s a high compliment to musicians. Despite being greatly influenced by the aforementioned Rage, Milagro’s lyrics are abstract and emotional, allowing the listener to apply the moods he sets to themselves. Basically, Milagro is playing great music and using it as a vehicle for the movements he stands behind. What are those movements? He clearly explains a few injustices that he feels should be brought to public awareness on his web-page. They are well researched and it includes some great links, so check it out. He does more justice to those injustices than I can really do here. In short, they involve the Philadelphia incident involving Mumia Abu-Jamal and Native American Leonard Peltier. Both allegedly imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit. Milagro writes "The first step is to realize that problems exist. The next step is to change it." Using little more than equipment like a Roland 303, Korg Keyboard, a guitar, two turntables and a microphone, he’s written tunes good enough to get him invited to The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Dinner. All this, folks, without being signed to a record label. Not that he’s shrugging off the idea, he has a few meetings with some this month in fact. But Jonathan is interested in forming his own label; Esperanza Records, perhaps with the help of one of the majors. Of course, there’s a lot more I could say of Milagro. He’s keeps himself busy while keeping others entertained. He brings awareness without sounding like a preacher. I’m confidant in saying that we’ll be seeing him in the music biz in some fashion in the future. On the TMO broadcast, we’re playing two of his songs: Fresh Harvest and Flotante. As we do with all of our featured artists, we’ll keep you updated on Milagro’s journey, or as he would call it, his Revolution.-MAYDAYORBIT THE ONLINE RADIO STATION
