Press Reviews
CD review:SINGULARITY by Randy Smith. Randy Smith's Singularity is one of those albums you would play if you can't decide what sort of mood you are in. It's a real mixed bag, one that could almost be thought to be the work of four different artists and not one. Randy is a veteran of the music scene, and plays guitar and keyboards on all tracks. The CD kicks off with the creamy pop song "I'm Not Wasting My Time", featuring a strong chorus and a healthy spread of lead guitar hero stuff. The mood changes considerably for "Why On Earth", a keyboard based song, but with considerably more energy than the first track. The guitar work here is more incidental but there's still an arousing central axe break that works well with this song. "Clouds At Sunrise" is my firm favourite, a relaxing instrumental that possesses a distinct Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield) flavour. While "Sport Car Spot" is clearly the weakest track on this CD, it was written as a commercial jingle and pretends to be nothing more than just that. "Turboland" exposes the funky side of Mister Smith, with just a hint of tribal rhythm - not too much to spoil this. I would have liked to hear Randy singing over this one though - if this song wants for anything, it would be a vocal overlay. As an instrumental though, it succeeds in retaining the interest of the listener. "Wavetingle" is also an instrumental, more complex in structure that Turboland and a credit to the imagination of its creator, plus you can actually dance to this one. "Song Of The Wind" rounds out the album with a broth of samples that evolves into a pleasant musical landscape. However, like chewing gum that loses its flavour after a few minutes, this song is a little longer than its appeal factor, and my attention span ran out at about the four minute mark.Overall though, this CD is a good listen, and is well worth another spin. I rate this one at 7 out of 10 - I feel a little short-changed by the inclusion of only 7 tracks, and would have liked to have heard hear more of Randy's capable singing voice.Review by Soul Surgeon |
