Artist History
Audrey Smilley was formed in 1988 by former members of the Arizona death/goth band Theatre of Ice. Drawing on influences as diverse as Blue Oyster Cult, KISS, Neil Diamond, and the Beatles, Audrey Smilley has played shows all over the Wasatch front. The band's blend of acoustic and electric guitars with tight three and four part harmonies grabs you immediately. Lyrically, Audrey Smilley is eclectic, ranging from love songs to dark humour. Plagued by an almost endless procession of drummers, the band struggled to share its original music with a public steeped in a top 40 mentality. Audrey Smilley played throughout Utah up until December of 1990 when the band relocated to southern California. However, their brand of guitar-based power pop was not to break through the heavy-metal-make-up band stranglehold on the charts until about 1993 (Gin Blossoms, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Refreshments, et. al). Sadly, by then Audrey Smilley was long gone. After a triumphant debut at a Huntington Beach night club, the band called it quits in the summer of 1991. Much of their pre-California history was chronicled by Kels Goodman in the independent film, "Audrey Smilley: The Life of a Struggling Band." It's a fascinating, if somewhat depressing, look at what the band went through at their peak. Having said that, the guys still keep in touch and have discussed the possibility of long distance recording. There is even talk of an eventual reunion show which would serve as a capstone to the Goodman documentary, but there are no concrete plans. Still, the music has managed to survive. Give it a chance. I think you'll like it. |

Press Reviews
Formed in early 1988, Audrey Smilley is already making a moderate dent in the music scene. Mixing acoustic and electric guitars--they are currently sans drummer--Audrey Smilley has played an eclectic run of gigs stretching from Ogden to Provo and points between. In their current alignment, they can be heard this month (Sept. 14-16) at the Pie Pizzaria.Audrey Smilley are Dale Garrard on lead guitar, Craig Moore on rhythm guitar and George Carlston on bass. All three share and harmonize vocals. Garrard and Moore first worked together in 1986 at Decision Making Information in Provo and later played in the primarily recording band, Theatre of Ice. Now all three members contribute to Theatre of Ice and collaborated on a 7" single entitled, "Kill Your Girlfrien d" which is also a favorite at Audrey Smilley shows. The flip side of that single is "Mommy Stinks Real Bad," not a bad ode for a Utah County bunch. Go figure. Playing throughout Utah County, Audrey Smilley also opened for American Music Club at their rec ent Salt Lake Word appearance. Most of their music is original--a big plus in our book--but also perform some lesser known covers by such acts as the Beatles ("One After 909"), Elvis, Squeeze, the Rutles, Spinal Tap and even Johnny Cash. Audrey Smilley pl ays a wide range of music and are not easily categorized. However, they are adaptable and will play from a list of AOR to alternative modern music. Give them a listen.--The Private Eye, Sept. 8, 1989 |
