Artist History
Thanks to early exposure to jazz and classical music, courtesy of WTTW (the PBS affiliate in Chicago), I developed a sophisticated ear as a child. I loved jazz at the time, but no more than any other music. The turning point came when my mother gave me a copy of Herbie Hancock's {I}Maiden Voyage{/I} when I was twelve, and I tried duplicating George Colemen's eliptical solos on the clarinet I played in band at school. Six years later, the clarinet had given way to the guitar. Like most guitarists, I originally picked up the instrument to join a band and meet girls. And like most guitarists of my generation, my first band was a heavy metal outfit. Not what I originally wanted, but in 1988, there wasn't much else in the midwest for a budding teenage musician to play(grunge didn't make it's way to South Elgin until '92). I, like a lot of others, eventually fell under the spell of Jimi Hendrix, and I abandoned heavy metal for psychedelic sound, adding latin rythmns inspired by my beloved Santana records. This is what I played when I auditioned and jammed, but at night I listened to jazz. Eventually my ability matched my desire, and I began to play what I had listened to for much of my life. After a while, as I made more progress with my intrument, I became more intrerested in "thirdstream" music, in the traditional sense; the combination of jazz with my other lifelong musical love, classical music. |
