Press Reviews
The debut CD from the Nosmo Kings, a three piece bluesy rock band from Texas, opens with an explosive instrumental titled "Lugnut", and we know immediately that this isn't going to be another Stevie Ray clone trio. Jazz and rock elements are all over the place, from the Jeff Beckish intro to Bobby Ysaguirre's drum solo near the end. This proves to be the case throughout the CD, even when covering Junior Wells' "Sure Looks Good" they put their own stamp on it with harmony vocals, which they employ more extensively than most blues bands. Their original songs - the other eight songs were all written by the band members - show various influences. Todd Marquart's Robin Trowerish swirling guitar sounds on "I'll Never Change" are one example. He also plays some charged up funk rhythm parts on "Bad Luck” and his solos are always exciting and often surprising. The instrumental "Pickle" is a burner from first note to last. Todd and bassist Mark Staab sing well together and Mark plays solid parts with Ysaguirre and Mike Stafford, who plays on three songs. These guys are working hard to forge a sound different from the pack, always a good idea in blues. The Nosmo Kings show talent in their writing, particularly in the rhythm grooves they create, and in the humorous lyrics for "It's Alright" and "100 Miles", a pair of breakup songs. Their playing is always energetic and the arrangements are tight and eschew the self-indulgence so prevalent in blues these days. They're only a hit song or two away from a major label deal, I'll bet.-Mike Ferguson, GB Records, Hays, KS..........Every once in a long while I find an album that’s actually intelligently written - as opposed to one playing a million miles an hour and screaming as many obscenities as possible. This three-piece may be Late For The Gig, but they weren’t late for practice. Song after song of tight riffs with a rhythm section that never stops. From mellow tunes like “I’ll Never Change” to toe tappers like “Bad Luck”, these songs would have even made the great Stevie Ray Vaughan give a nod of approval. Todd Marquart (guitar/vocals), Mark “Stubby” Staab (bass/vocals) and Bobby Ysaguirre (drums/percussion) make up one of the strongest Electric Blues acts I’ve seen around Dallas in a long time.-Derek James, Harder Beat, Dallas, TX..........Get out the fire extinguisher this album smokes. Todd Marquart cranks out some of the hottest licks your gonna hear in this genre. The vocals are good and the CD has a great production for a debut. This CD is much better than some of the boring overproduced major label blues-rock albums that have come out this year. Like the cover shot, this album is a smoker and highly recommended to those who like their blues raw, rockin’, and with a lot of energy and tasty guitar work.-Steve A., Two Guys Music, Warwick, Rhode Island..........To call The Nosmo Kings a blues rock band begins to scratch the surface of what they're capable of. Their first CD of original music, Late for the Gig, reveals their jazz as well as blues and rock influences. Guitarist Todd Marquart, bassist Mark "Stubby" Staab and drummer Bobby Ysaguirre have turned out nine respectable tracks with instrumental power and some rhythmic flair. The strongest cuts are instrumentals, particularly the jazzy "Lugnut" and "Pickle," what I guess you'd call an instrumental medley of blues styles. "It's Alright," a tune penned by Marquart, is a really good piece of traditional yet original swing blues.-The Link magazine, Dallas, TX..........Hot licks from a cool band. Some cranked up blues with a touch of rock and roll. The music reminds me of early Johnny Winter. Good songs with some killer guitar solos thrown in to spice it up a bit. Play this one cranked up to 11.Fulton Calvery, Wichita, KS |
