Goddamn, this is a good album! Although I'm sure they'd qualify themselves as being a ska band, I'm not sure that "ska" really articulates what they're all about. They're more of a... well, I'm not sure what the hell to call them, but they're good. The first song, "I Killed Joe", is a HC punk (with mild ska influences) song about the brutal killing of a beloved show dog named Joe (PETA supporters - It was self-defense, Joe was rabid). Great song, and clever. "Burning Bridges" is some kind of weird punk/ska hybrid - though the material isn't anywhere near as peculiar as the first song, the music is even more innovative and well-crafted. "Larry Went Nuts" is definitely very ska in its sound - excellent ska, by the way. "Triumph of the Shadow" is instrumental - usually I hate instrumental songs (my guitar player friend in college referred to them as "jacking off"), but this song really showcases the musical abilities of everybody on the album. "B.F.O.C" (for "Big Fucking Orange Cow") is mostly acoustic (another sound I don't generally think much of), but again, surprisingly good. This album covers a lot of musical ground, and it covers it well. Throughout this album, the very finely-crafted songs and high quality musicianship really shines through. Noseless Nixon (both the band and the album) are great fun to listen to, and very easily worth the five dollar charge. I hope this band comes to my area so I can take a listen. My only complaint about this album (and it's a big one): It's too short. Rating: 5 out of 5 Ian 565 at Citizen565.com Jan 2001-----In the admirable tradition of independent bands finding their own soundsand making up rules as they go along, Great Green Grasskappa punch into the regional music scene with a strong dose of "Fresh Cuts." Looped with creativity, a style that throws props to bands like ska legends the Toasters, and a pure disdain for Marilyn Manson, Grasskappa create a strong, youth-driven record. Grasskappa's first album, "Fresh Cuts," released April 1998, is a breath of musical fresh air. Strong horn arrangements stay new and innovative throughout the band's first attempt at a record. A solid rhythm section anchors this Central Illinois ska machine, with bass lines and drum parts laced with a touch of jazz, Latin, Caribbean, reggae and punk, all of which allows creative freedom for a heavy-hitting horn section. Rhythm guitar is an essential element of every ska band, and Great Green Grasskappa is no exception. Instead of pushing a needless heavy guitar riff into every track, as is common with most independent recordings, Grasskappa takes the musical high road by leaving the six string on reserve and showcasing the horns. Lyrically, Grasskappa is humorous and creative. The first track on the disc, "Great Green Grasskappa/Punker Than You" has an infectious horn hook which gets better with every play. Other notable tracks include, "Bull Fighter," a straight punk song with a Latin feel and rousing personal favorite and "Beer," an anthem for rude-boy drinkers everywhere. -Nathaniel park, Daily Egyptian, July 9, 1999 Vol. 84, No. 164
