Artist History
An interesting fact about Elada: they are a short band. Yes, they are indeed short; in fact, I can prove to you that they are definitely below average. Some website on the Internet reports current averages for white American men and women to be 5 foot 9.5 inches and 5 foot 4 inches, respectively. For two men and one woman, that overall average is 5.76 repeating. Compare to that the average of the band's collective height: 5.63 repeating. See what I mean? Because their proportions are correct, you may not, upon first glance, notice this abnormality. You may also be tricked into thinking they are regular-sized when they are all together on stage, but do you see how long Sarah's bass looks? Does she play a long scale? No, she's just very small. Notice how Aaron is dwarfed by his oversized drum kit? Perhaps he should have invested in a standard kit. And take note when they climb onto stage, and Adam has to lower the mike stand so that it's not over his head. If you don't recognize these signs during the show, you will once they enter the crowd -- their seemingly grand stature from the stage will disappear, transforming them into regular, approachable people. |

Press Reviews
PULSE review 12/19/2001 Elada - Suspensory (I)—2001 A truly sweet album packed full of harmonies and top-notch musicianship. The melodies rise and fall inside a lovely vortex of piano, guitars, voices and beats. Lyrically rich and unafraid to be downright pretty. Very solid pop sensibilities. Where the hell have you guys been? (PD)
Decoy Music 04/2003 - Elada are a four piece soft rock band consisting of two guys and two girls from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Indie-pop with influences that are all over the spectrum, and pulling off the differing sounds extremely well. Utilizing male and female vocals, an organ, and a banjo, Elada are able to create something very different from the rest of their genre, and if they continue in the direction they are heading, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Simple…Catchy…Unique. Those are the first 3 words that came to mind when putting in Elada's self released cd "Suspensory." The album opener, and runner for best track is "Here In This place." The vocals are extremely soft, yet harsh, and the female vocals in the back accompany it so well that I can't help but love it. They are one of the few bands that can write music that seems so simple, but is well written and catchy enough to allow me to totally ignore that. The next track, "Carnival Song" focuses more on the female vocals, which I like, but not as much as when the two vocalists are working together. Also, when alone, the female vocals sound a bit more polished and proper, which some may enjoy, but I find the harshness to be what makes Elada stand out. "My Only Suit" is another standout track on the album. It is one of their darker songs, and although a bit different from the rest of the album, the eeriness is definitely a good thing. Lastly, "Prosperity For Some" shows off Elada's more alt-country side, which shows how much of a range their influences have.
So, my troubles with this record, although few, are still here. The packaging to "Suspensory" leaves a lot to be desired. I know that the simplicity is usually what makes Elada stand out, but when getting a first impression of a band, aesthetics are a must. Also, whistling overtop of indie-rock is definitely not something I would suggest, but I can see how some people may like it, again, for the simplicity. So, overall, I would definitely suggest Elada to fans of their style, it is one of the few albums where the words "sweet" or "cute" definitely wouldn't be out of place in describing.
7/10
