Artist description
Wes wrote this bio. I dunno what band he was talking about. In his discourse on Greek drama, Poetics, Aristotle explained that in drama there are certain unities that exist. One of those unities is that humor and tragedy (or, for a modern application, drama) are never mingled. English playwrights of the latter 16th century (including Shakespeare) broke that rule and it worked. In the latter 20th century, musicians, especially of the rock genres, have also been mixing the humorous with the serious-this is nothing new. What makes Tiny People so different is that they do it on purpose. Tiny People are from various parts of the coal fields of southern West Virginia. Armed with a few guitars and basses, some unworthy drums, a really shitty pedal, some cords, a four track, a computer, a hint of wit, a token dose of angst (you would be angstful too if you had unwillingly existed in a conservative society all of your life), and too few mics, Wesley Jarrell II, Chad Kimbler, and Josh York set about the taxing task of having as much fun with (and at) music as they could possibly manage. Though Tiny People was only a summer project, it evolved into something more after one performance and the recording of (“for posterity’s sake” was the excuse at the time) an extended demo (an eight-track compact disc now being sold at http://www.mp3.com/tinypeople). Now there were fans, and now the intense joy of performing was fresh on the memory and in the skin once more. The boys really needed girlfriends. Country, jazz, pop, and the Indian raga are employed or combined to produce an indie-influenced experimental sound that is at odds with itself, its audience, and its creators. The music of Tiny People is at once both cerebral and anti-intellectual, comic and deeply serious, pedantic and fresh beyond its time. It’s neat. |
