Artist description
Guitars, bass, drums, guitar, bass, drums... these 3 words have become the mantra of music today, from alternative to country, from triple A to pop. And what isn’t guitars, bass, and drums is usually some tired deviation that involves horns, synths, and samplers. The Ennui Malaise Experience, on the other hand, took to the dumpsters, the trashcans, and the curbside pickups, building their own instruments from discarded and found objects like bedpans, doorsprings, shovel handles, broken toys, pitchforks, and lawn rakes. They create a melodic cacophony similar to that of Howling Wolf, Einstruzende Neubauten and ? and The Mysterians meeting in a blender set on liquefy. Like the designs of musical maverick Harry Partch, the instruments are artistic and intriguing to the eyes. Many, such as Whistle While You Work, Washboard Slim, the Vertical Whirligig, and the Electric Aeolian Harp have been featured at several arts festivals, including the Philadelphia Environmental Protection Agency’s recycled art exhibit. Ennui Malaise performed at the 2001 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Most recently, The Ennui Malaise Experience was included on Groove Disques upcoming Stiff Records Tribute/ Compilation, The Stiff Generation, which also features Matthew Sweet, Young Fresh Fellows, and Bill Lloyd (of Foster and Lloyd), due for release in 2002.
Although the members of The Experience have a rather lengthy combined musical past, they prefer to eschew the usual bloated, self-aggrandizing braggadocio in order to let the music and the instruments stand front and center.
